Re: Lying in the Hands of God...

Just reading over the posts...this song is so versatile. It's really awesome to see all of the different meanings that this song holds for people. I like to think that it's about Dave coming to Christ, but I KNOW that's not the case! At least not yet.

Hey has anyone felt like LITHOG reminds you of the sound of the Tribe of Heaven Album?? I always think that when I listen to this song.

Maybe a little bit. The Tribe of Heaven album was an awesome record. I love it.

I'll just write down a couple of things that came to mind when listening closely and clearly:
soldier-to protect you/defend you. Divine gift that if tasted he'll give in (believe)
don't talk to me about love, I know what it is cuz I'm lying in the hands on God (Roi)
My world in upside down since(floor/ceiling) since you flew away(butterfly's wings cut)
if you knew how I feel then you wouldn't have left me
angels in your head- moment of death/ calling from up above
    tears of joy-suffering finally ended/happiness
you will rise- give up you soul to lie in the hands of God
skin growing slowly-life getting back to normal
choking-crying to the point that you choke on your tears
want comfort-"a mother is God in the eyes of a child"- call my mother
    *****

This song is the only Big Whiskey song that gets better with every listen. Others stay the same, some are getting worse, but LITHOG is amazing. I don't hesitate to lump this song in with the best of DMB.

I believe Semper is right on the money with this one. This was my initial interpretation as well. Even though homosexuals are working just as hard toward the same things as heterosexuals, they're sometimes discriminated against. This can make them "depressed" and believe that "now the floor is the ceiling." As in, they're going to hell and the floor is as high as they'll get. Of course, truly, they believe they'll be in the hands of God because they aren't hateful and aren't judging. It's kind of a roller coaster of confidence and insecurity between the chorus and verses, respectively.

Roi - save your sermons for someone that's (shouldn't this be "who's"??) afraid to love - don't spend your time crying over me when we were not afraid to show our love for one another

Dave - if you knew what i feel then you couldn't be so sure - if you (Roi) had to suffer what i'm going through (losing a close friend) you wouldn't be able to just move on with your life

Roi - i'll be right here lying in the hands of god - i'll be up here in heaven waiting for you to join me

here it comes diving into me - the news of Roi's death sinking in after the initial shock and disbelief

now the floor is the ceiling - the news turned Dave's world upside down

if you never flew why would you cut the wings off a butterfly? - i think is either dave talking to everyone else about Roi. Roi's spirit/soul/ghost being able to fly now that it has left his physical body and to not try to hold Roi back from taking the next part of his journey

or it could be Dave asking Roi why he would fly and the "cut the wings off a butterfly" part is symbolizing Roi's talent (the wings) being taken away from him (cut off)

That is awesome. I like your interpretation.

I only read a couple of posts, but my interpretation of this song is this...

Don't preach at me for not having the faith that you might think is what it takes to live. Living is loving and thats all the faith in life we need.
So save your preaching for someone who is not really living. For someone who is afraid to love. Loving and living is his way of living in the hands of God.

This is such a beautiful way of living your life. I agree completely. This song reminds me of an Emily Dickinson poem "Some Keep the Sabbath by Going to Church"

If you like this song, you will appreciate the poem.

My faith in life is proven to me and strengthened by the beauty we have in this world.

Posting this again on this thread. I really don't think the 'if you never flew why would you cut the wings off a butterfly?' part is about LeRoi because these words were written before he died.

This thread discusses a lyrical tease Dave did in June of 2008.

"if you never flew then why would cut the wings off a butterfly" if you have never loved than why would you try to preach your religion onto someone who has soared in love?

I have been listening to this song over and over again recently. I have concluded that this song is another example of Carter's impeccable drumming on a slow/not so loud song. His drumming on Pay For What You Get and #34 are just freakin' sweet. LITHOG to me, seems like it would be a really awkward song to drum to, and Carter dominates the balls out of it. It doesn't have a beat like other songs and he's hitting at random stuff it sounds like and it's awesome.
