Re: ***Official Ants Photography Thread***

I had a credential for the X Games in Minneapolis last weekend. First time shooting extreme sports, so it was interesting. The media shooting positions from the field were heavily regulated in terms of allowable locations. There were several events where VIP ticket holders had better on-field access than the media, which was kind of frustrating. Most of my favorite shots ended up coming from shooting from the stands where cleaner backgrounds could be found.

Here are a couple of shots. The two wide shots of the stadium were taken with my iPhone. Basically anything with the small watermarks are shot with my DSLR's. Everything else is iPhone.

    Nice shots, Ben.

This album is a few years old, but illustrates why I love summer in the PNW.

I'll try and post some more as I get outside this summer.

Hey Ants, thought I'd check in.

I've wanted a DSLR for years, and *finally* took the plunge. My Mom had recently bought a Nikon D3300 and realized that she was having more fun taking pics with her iPhone, so I just bought it from her. I know almost nothing about photography, though I've been taking phone pics for years, and do really love posting/interacting via Instagram. I've watched a few hours worth of the basics/tutorials through Youtube, though I'm quite eager to learn more.

You can check out my Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/revolution36/ keep in mind most shots are with an iPhone, though there are a few recent shots that I've taken with the Nikon.

A friend recently suggested this lens, any thoughts on it? https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-AF-S-NI...nikon+35mm+1.8

That is a very good lens to start off with. I've always said a fast prime lens like that is the best first lens to get as a teaching tool for how aperture works (depth of field and how apertures affect shutter speed and ISO to get proper exposure) and how to compose photos by moving your feet rather than zooming.

I ended up getting it. I've only played around with it a little bit, but loving it so far. Can't wait to explore a bit more.

So my dad wants me to buy his friends old 40D. It's a 10 megapixel camera, but my phone shoots 12. Are these going to shoot very similar products? I don't want to waste $200.

You really won't notice much of a difference with 10 vs 12 megapixel but that is such an old model I'd go for something a little better. 200$ also seems way high to me for that camera. IDK Canon very well but you could get a used Nikon D3300 for not that much more and it would be a way better purchase imo

$200 is higher than what I've seen online, but it's not much more. I'd really like a camera that has the LCD panel on top because they're bigger cameras. I've held cameras like the Rebels, and the Nikon D3300, and they're very uncomfortable, tight, and too light for me. That what I figured though regarding the megapixels. Thanks for responding, you were helpful.

That all depends on the glass you hang off of it. Nothing wrong with that old sensor but it's not going to perform as well as a new high end cell phone sensor. The lens might make a huge difference however.

Happy Hanukkah! Enjoy the new rig, I’ve had a great time making photos for years and find it one of the few purely enjoyable things I do these days.

How often and how much are things off? Do you have to tune each lens separate for each body you'd use them on?

There are pretty much always adjustments that need to be made. Here are the values I have saved for my different cameras and lenses, but it will be different for everyone and their specific equipment. The camera is the column header and the lens is the first part of each row.

    Lens D700 D800 D810 D850 D3s D4
    14-24 -8 -11 -6 -12 -8 -8
    24-70 10 5 11 7 11 9
    70-200 3 2 7 6 3 6
    70-200 1.4x -9 -14
    70-200 2.0x -20 -16
    35 -5 1 4 0 6 3
    50 -11 -8 -3 3
    85 3 0 6 -3 6 6
    300 5 -4
    300 1.4x -11 -20
    300 2.0x 16 18
    200-400 4 10 3
    200-400 1.4x (II) 8 4
    200-400 2.0x (III) 17
    500 2 4 1 1
    500 1.4x (III) 3 5 6 5
    500 2.0x (III) -17 -20 -14

EDIT: The spreadsheet doesn't exactly translate to the forum capabilities, but hopefully you get the idea.

Nice... And the bodies remember this so it's already done when you put the lens on, right?

Yeah, it's all automatic after you get the values plugged into the camera. It even knows when you put a teleconverter on a lens and treats that combination as a new lens. The toughest part is zoom lenses because the camera can only save one value for each lens, which is annoying. Like on the 24-70, you might need -3 at 24mm, but +5 at 70mm. Well since the camera can only save one value you have to either pick something in the middle or pick the value for the focal length you most often use.

The process to get these values is tedious, so look up some tutorials to do it right. The newer Nikon cameras (D5, D850, and I think D500) have auto-AF tuning, which is pretty nice. It still requires taking focus chart shots, but the camera will automatically calculate the correct AF value to plugin once it has the shot (recommended to do it 10 times for each lens and pick the value that comes up most often since it can vary from shot to shot).

cool, thanks! I'm almost always manual focusing, so it hasn't been much of a concern, but good to know.

Here are some of my photos from the Super Bowl that I've posted on my Instagram account if anyone is interested:

I also forgot to post this here, but here is a blog post I wrote about shooting the "Minneapolis Miracle" a few weeks ago when the Vikings beat the Saints:

Hey all, I picked up a camera last summer and have really taken to this hobby over the last few months. I still have so much to learn, hoping this is just the start. I launched a website this morning to showcase some pictures and sell prints. Check it out when you can, looking for some feedback. Thanks
