Energy vs Subtlety

Having listened to DMB for many years now, I was wondering if anyone felt the same as me. It seems like recently there has been an incessant drive for more and more energy in the shows. The sound is louder, solos are bigger, the voice is being torn like never before. I feel that some of the subtlety and beauty of earlier years is being lost, even in little things like the demise of the falsetto in parts of DDTW and crash into me. It can still be seen sporadically in songs like proudest monkey and the newer break for it and also in D+T shows, but it is more of a rarity. Looking on message boards, it seems that people use the quieter moments nowadays for a piss break.
Dont get me wrong, energy is good, but there is more power in contrast and I feel the balance has shifted too far. Anyone agree??

    I agree 100%

I think the early DDTWs were the best. Nowadays, most shows are just packed with loud/fast/energetic songs to get the crowd into it.

This year was better though. We got Cry Freedoms, Busted stuff, etc etc.

I like the more subtle DMB of 1999 and 2000. They sounded more jazzy...

i've only been to shows in 09 and this year. but the songs that are create a vibe are the one's i definitely remember best. Proudest Monkey on Live at the Gorge is a good example. you can hear the crowd clapping and it's much more about the whole experience surrounding you rather than a bombardment of noise.

Although i may get some flack for this, when the crowd sings Some Devil and the "YOU said always and forever" part is sang, it's awesome to hear everyone sing it in unison.

Since Butch left I've missed this subtlety.

To be honest, I don't really like having Tim around in every show, we don't need overdrive all the time!
