Re: ** Official Teachers Thread **

I teach 8th grade English. Last year was my first year, so I only got to use DMB once, and it was a cover. I played "Long Black Veil" when we were discussing ballads. A few of the kids really got into it. I am going to try and integrate more music this year.

P.S. Thanks for reminding me that my vacation is over in a few short days.

I am a permanent sub for a high school and I have used numerous DMB songs when I have to give some impromptu lessons (thanks for forgetting to leave out those lesson plans teach ) They have come in handy for Social Studies, Poetry, Music, History, World Cultures, English, Foreign Languages and of course Art. Basically if I've been left with nothing then DMB is my answer!

I teach year 4. I have previously included pictures of the band in writing tasks, however that's about the extent of it.

Well I did my student teaching in a MS/HS, spending most of my time with the MS segment and have been involved with marching band instruction/planning/consulting for about 6 years now, so I'm at least a little more prepared than the average joe.

    *nerd time*
What's amazing is the amount of literature that's available for middle school bands. Symphonies can perform Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music or Rimsky-Korsakov's (sp?) Russian Easter Overture or Stravinsky's Firebird and there are pretty decent arrangements of this stuff for middle schools as well.

Yeah, which is funny because we are Lutheran.

This is her second year at this school, she really likes it, its an inner city school, but they have really high standards, it actually works really well for everyone the kids do better, the teachers do better, everyone wins

hmph!...memo to parents. you know, i had a parent calling (the principal) and complaining re: my syllabus already? and they hadn't even seen it. they were just going off what their kid came home and complained about.

i went to the same (catholic) school where i presently teach. the standards have dropped significantly over the years. it's sad.

whatever. that's why i'm back in school. again.

but good for the wife! glad she likes it.
