PSA: Band and Taper mic stands

you hear it all the time - I saw a few mic stands at the show

the band has mic stands around the venue for various reasons and they are usually clamped to a rail and they also always have one in front of the soundboard that will look exactly like a taper stand because it's 15+ feet in the air with a pair of mics on top

I had a few minutes before n1 at Deer Creek to take a few photos of both the band's mic stands and of course our taper mic stand

Interesting! We were sitting in the 2nd row of Sec G behind the VIP boxes N1 at Deer Creek and saw those clamped to the rail of the boxes and were wondering about them.

Saw you mentioned in Drews' text file, for SPAC N1, were you in the PIT? If so, I can't believe I didn't know you were there, I would have come over to say hi.

Re: PSA: Band and Taper mic stands

I encourage everyone to support the tapers as best you can.

Have great seats that can be used for taping? Check for stickied taper thread. With the differing levels of seats (pit, lowers and uppers) many tapers are stuck with shitty uppers and scrambling to get a spot that can tape a show from effectively. Do they need pits? In some cases yes, others no....

If you hear people complaining (and yes, there are all sorts of assholes out there) about stands set them straight.

Most of all recognize the hard work taping is. Tailgating cut short. You're not gonna be any good if you're fucked up anyways. After show you're trying to get out as security is bitching at you to get out. And that there's hours of work involved converting them for your listening pleasure.

Am I a taper? Nope, but have played my part over the years and continue to. We're losing tapers. The days of 3-4 tapes at the big shows are over.... One SPAC and Florida run taper? Pay attention folks.... pay the fuck attention...

    My PSA is over now

Thanks for the info Crumbo, I think I always assumed they were band mic stands versus taper stands. Forgive me but why would the band tape from the crowd when they have the soundboard feeds?

I believe the only "crowd" mic the band uses is the one at the board (it records the music too). I should ask Tommy what he's running that setup into

the rest of the mics are analyzer mics I believe
    something about measuring sound/volume/etc.
Tommy explained it to me once but I forget

I think there's a staff/equipment page somewhere on the WH or official site that might have those listed

I talked to Jeff about that a few years ago. In addition to what you told us all they also want audience interaction or singing along, cheering, etc, etc to mix in for the live trax releases.

Hello all!! Been a while since the old Road Crew chimed in here.

Cumbo, in addition to being a handsome gentleman, is mostly right. The only mics going to the multitrack are pair at the mixing board. The rest which are usually zip tied to railings in the audience are analysis microphones, which go to a computer program that Tommy runs. He can compensate for the changes in acoustics due to the weather and audience. They are for everyone's benefit, so looking out for them and not moving them makes Tommy and Jeff happy. Singing into them or grabbing on to them make Tommy and Jeff sad pandas.

    Thanks Crumbo for the PSA!

last yr at SPAC Tommy was a sad panda ready to kick some ass, don't grab the mics and act like a jerk people no matter who's they are.

PS Looking to get better at pole dancing? Learn the basics, a stand at a concert isn't secure enough for you to hold I any fashion let alone spin or pull on.

Edit, some cool posts by the crew in the past.
    Thanks for posting

i think, those mics are the giant large diaphragm mics on each side of the stage lip.

    like here:

    https://sharegoodvibes.files.wordpre...0&h=200&crop=1

the other "crowd" mics are the pair of Neumann's that Tommy/Jeff run at FOH (as in crumbo's pics). Which, they don't fly high anymore. They run those at head height now, because that's where the crowd is.

My understanding is that most venues permit you to bring it in, but I am not a taper so I cannot confirm that 100%.

You just bring it in. Clear and polite that it is audio recording gear, which is allowed by the band. Usually they have to have security "check" to make sure it is indeed allowed. Most places know already or will get it cleared up within 2 minutes. Quick search of the bag and then you are in.

Oh how I wish this were true on the west coast. Hollywood was the best.

3 different security gates, 8 different security people, 4 different "supervisors."

    First gate:
    Wait in line and then...

    Summarizing...

Supervisor: you ain't bringing none of that up in here
Me: it's actually audio recording which should be allowed today. I completely understand your normal policies. The band, however, allows it.
    Not today they don't.
It has been allowed at every show including ones at this venue the last 3 times.
    Not today.
It actually states that it is allowed on the ticket.
Doesn't matter. Not here it's not.
Well, it's actually on the ticket here. *shows ticket*
That's not for this place. I'm in charge here and I said no.
Would you mind calling someone to verify?
I'm not calling nobody. I'm the supervisor.
Would you mind checking with your supervisor?
Not going to happen. I'm telling you no. You can leave it over there outside.
I understand that standard policy is no, but it is allowed today. If you wouldn't mind calling your security director or someone with the band I'm sure they can clear this up.
    Stop it.
    Excuse me?
You keep trying to trick me into letting you in. It's not happening.
No, I'm simply asking if you wouldn't mind checking with someone else who can provide more information.
You're not listening. I am the supervisor. This is my area. I'm telling you no. You can leave.

She actually stopped two other security personnel who overheard and were trying to help and actually radio in for information. She told them they could not call and check anyone because she said so. She then had someone escort me out.

    Gate 2:
    Wait in line and then...

Denied. Why? Because security egomaniac from gate 1 called ahead on the radio to describe me and tell them not to let me in. They also refused to check with anyone.

    Gate 3:
    Wait in line and then...

Finally met two nice supervisors that called ahead to the band, verified in about 2 minutes that everything was allowed. They apologized for the wait and trouble and in I went. All in all about a 45 minute delay in getting in.

Oh what a hassle free hobby this is lol

Thank you for taping! people don’t actually want to do their fucking jobs. Lazy and stupid ass people. Ugh hate that tapers have to deal with this nonsense. Is it always this difficult to get equipment into the venues? Was it still difficult in the early to mid 2000s when some shows would have like 5 or 6 tapers? Or did the venues generally know the deal?

Re: PSA: Band and Taper mic stands

speaking as a taper (not so much with DMB but w/ many other bands), its become increasingly more difficult in the past 10 years thanks to random terror attacks (London, Paris, etc). security has stepped up their policies and bag searches tenfold. This unfortunately creates more issues for tapers as we are the only ones with bags allowed in. (and even then its dependent on the venue)....

its a mess and I can see why DMB tapers have dwindled over the past 10 years. sometimes its just not worth the hassle, not the mention ticket prices have soared 2/3x what they were 10 years ago.
