C. Rose interview vs. road to BW?

Somebody is lying in one of these.. Yes?

In the Charlie Rose interview everyone in the Band says Everyday is the best album they ever made. Carter even calls the early stuff "sophmoric" and this is "professional"?? Glen Ballard surgically removed (IMO) the heart of the bands magic by keeping their songs to 4 minutes.

Then in the Road to Big Whiskey, Dave admits they lost their soul with "everyday" Ballard was a mistake, Boyd hated coming in to play"PRE written parts"...

Watching the Charlie Rose interviews now, I squirm at the ass kissing the rest of the band was giving Dave and how far brainwashed Dave became by Ballard and his Pop motif..

Thoughts???

I like in The Road To Big Whiskey when they're going through and talking about all the albums and whatnot, they talk about Stand Up for like 38 seconds haha

There is no conspiracy theory or anything like that, it's pretty simple, whatever album they are promoting is going to be the best album ever.

I saw Boyd in the Ultrasound MTV series say "we took it to the next level with this album" , he said the exact same thing during the BW interviews....

    It's marketing 101....

move on, nothing to see here.

This...could anyone imagine Dave on Letterman or Conan later in the year saying "well it's not as a good as our first three albums, but we tried our best so buy it anyway!"

    Both are fantastic documentaries.

Road to Big Whiskey is great in a sense that it gives us fans everything we want to hear. The band talking about the Big 3 being the Big 3, and that the other albums are not up to par. Its good for ease of mind, basically telling us they are on the same page as us. It also gives such great insight into the band and how things went down. It is such a great documentary, I could watch it all the time.

The Charlie Rose interview, however, is unbelievable. Charlie Rose really knew the band and their style well. He must have studied them the way he interviewed them. It seemed almost like he was "grilling" Dave about how commercial Everyday was. Charlie kinda saw where they faltered; he went so far as to ask Glen Ballard about the track times on the album. Charlie Rose was so well-versed in the band and their origins, it made for a great interview. This one is my favorite.

Maybe they felt that way at the time. Anytime you have something new, you're either going to adore it or abhor it. They (more than likely just Dave) probably thought Everyday was the best shit ever. It was completed in a manner so different than all of the other albums up to that point. It turned him from a depressed fuck into someone who was happy and enjoyed life and music again.

Charlie Rose is the best interviewer ever, other than maybe Howard Stern.

It's sorta like when you get a new girlfriend. You're really excited, it's something new and she's better than your last girlfriend (because we all know she was a disappointment after she went crazy). Then after you've forced your new girl's presence on all of your friends they get tired of her and start pointing out her flaws. You go into denial, then you realize they're right. So you break up with her and start working on finding a new one.

    SO, it's just like that.

After watching bits and pieces of all of Charlie Rose's interviews with Dave and DMB, he is the best person to interview the band. He knows them so well, truly the guy to do it.

both have foolish comments about the current work at the time.

i always loved the charlie rose interview because of the solo stone and performances from 2000.

Damn Carter sounds like he is taking a stab at Lillywhite when he says (paraphrasing) that they "are finally getting treated like good musicians, like professionals. We're not having to play by ear anymore. We have charts! The first few albums are sophomoric. This feels more professional."

I bet if he watched this video now he would feel like an ass for saying that. lol

You're probably right, but think about where they were at around that time. They had just had sessions fall apart with Lillywhite. Lillywhite told them going in it was a bad idea to try and record at home, and he was proven right. I'm sure Carter meant what he said at the time.

I liked hearing Dave's take on Napster. Makes Lars Ulrich look like even more of a d-bag hearing Dave say "I'm overpaid." and knowing how much Metallica makes.

I also thought it was strange that Carter said Everyday was their best album in that interview. But when I thought more about it, it makes sense. He was asked something along the lines of "Is this the best album you've ever written?" And he says yes, because WTF else are you going to say when you're doing an interview for that album? "Uh, no actually... this other one we made was much better."
