Re: The Travellers Thread

Here's a couple more shots from my trip.

In a classic red phone booth in London.
Big Ben.
The Sultan Abdul Samad building at Merdeka Square. It was here that the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Malaysian flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957.
The sleeper train.
Walking through the rainforest of the Singapore Botanical Gardens.
A bar called Clinic where you sit in wheelchairs and drink out of blood bags. Singapore is a little nuts. The mojitos there were very good, though.
The famous Merlion.
A shot of my friend and the Merlion. He had no idea what was going on at first.
The Sri Maha Mariamman Dhevasthanam Hindu temple. I had the best moments of my entire trip inside the temple.

I didn't eat there--I just went for drinks at the bar on the outside. It's all the same on the outside as in but it was such nice weather (compared to Philly) that I didn't want to be trapped indoors.

I did a lot of things in Singapore based on his suggestions. Foot reflexology, the hospital chic place and, most impressive, the Maxwell Hawker Center. I love how he really stresses the local food and cheap eats when he goes to a place instead of the 'best in town' (like Samantha Brown, for instance).

I have actually had a few fun times in Peoria. The Lariat Steakhouse was very nice for a good meal. The Heart of Illinois fair is very fun. Peoria also has a good Oktoberfest. The City Link is a fun way to get around and see the sights AND Glen Oak Park is pretty nice, too.

Edit: And I once had the most magnificent Saturday afternoon taking pictures and picking apples there.

Nice! I'll mention that place for dinner. I'm not paying so fuck the bill.

I do have Friday afternoon free so I'll have to check out the park for a long run or something.

If you're there through Saturday night, check out SOPs on main street. There will be a great band there on Saturday called Stellar Road. If you like DMB (you're on a DMB site....) you should have no problem getting into their groove. Good times guaranteed.

Just got back from Mendoza, Argentina. It's in the western part, only about 5 hours from Santiago, Chile. It is gorgeous...the drive goes through the Andes Mountains. I did some hiking and we went to about 9k feet of the highest moutain in the Western Hemisphere - Cerro Aconcagua - the tallest outside of the Himalayas. Did some rappelling and hot springs. Drank and danced all night long. Argentinians are amazing. Some of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen and such good people. Love to dance and go out late! Got to the disco at 2:30. Got back at about 7 and continued drinking wine. Some amazing wines.

Mendoza is beautiful. Highly recomend it to anyone going to Argentina. 12 hours on bus from Buenos Aires. I'm already planning another trip to Argentina, because there are so many places I haven't made it to!

I'm heading to Paris and London in 6 weeks. First time in each country.

Any places you think I should or shouldn't check out - - or decent places to eat??

I've only been to Paris for a long weekend, so I didn't get to see many things outside the major sights.. but, I lived in London for 4 months, so I can run on for days with things to do.

Here's my list of London favs (outside the major touristy stuff):
-Portobello Rd market on a Saturday morning for fresh fruit/veggies
-Spitalfields market on Sundays (Brick Lane is around the corner..great food)
-Camden market - great clothes, and good food as well..and quite cheap.
-Kensington palace gardens.. follow Kensington Park through to Hyde park..great walk. Also, visit Speakers corner in Hyde Park on a Sunday morning.
    -Primrose hill in Regents Park
-Greenwich (you can straddle the Prime Meridian and be in two hemispheres at once! Okay okay..touristy and cheesy..but it's a must do)
-Since you'll be there in the summer, hit up an outdoor cafe on James St
-DON'T go looking on the internet for the "best pub" or some garbage like that. Wander off the main drags (Oxford St and other High Streets) and find a little neighborhood pub.
-I don't know how old you are, but if you're a student, go see a show. Most shows save the first few rows of seats on weekdays for students and heavily discount the prices day of. ($40-$60 per ticket usually)
-Save money by grabbing breakfast/lunch from a grocery store (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Somerfields). They all have cheap sandwiches, croissants, etc.
-If you want good bars, go to Soho or the East End. Avoid tourist traps like Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square - bars and clubs there have at least a $20 cover charge, and they're filled with Americans.
-Wagamama noodle bar. Awesome food; mad cheap. All over London.
-If you'll be there a while, take a train out to some of the other popular places: Brighton beach is a great day trip, as is Oxford or Cambridge, Bath, Canterbury, Leeds, Windsor..or if you're feeling ambitious Edinburgh, Scotland is about a 4 hr train ride away.

Considering Saudi Arabia owns the majority of Sainsbury's and Tesco is your general shitty Corporate grocery store.

Go to the markets, they have real food, that tastes like, you know, real food, not that Tesco shit.

I did use to by my tea from Sainsbury's, it was my guilty pleasure. I just love their store brand tea, more than any other, and believe me, I have tried them all

Fair enough. I did not know that. Granted..even if I did know that, I probably still would've shopped there. A poor student has got to buy their McVitie's Digestives somewhere..

Does anyone know a way to find out what flight you're getting on hotwire? The one where you don't know when you fly until you pay for it.

    Re: The Travellers Thread

I'm waiting for my friend to hear back from his friend about whether we're all going to Holland the first week of May. He knew I needed to find out for sure if we were going to go sooner rather than later so I could apply for a passport and get it by May. So this was last week we talked, and I asked him if he could try to find out before the weekend. He said his friend hasn't responded to his Myspace message yet. Dude, what's wrong with calling him on his cell?

Anyway, I'm either going to Holland or "Porchview" the first week in May.

    Anyone ever been?

If you haven't already applied for your passport there is no hope of getting it by the first week of May!

You can get it in two weeks possibly less if you're lucky.

I applied for my passport the first week of February, and it took a little over a month, Cassie.
