Hiking/Mountaineering

Anyone have any recommendations for good hiking trips. I did some mountain guiding in Alaska the past couple summers and havn't been on many good trips since I came back to the midwest. The obvious is Colorado or other western states but if you have something else that is not well known I would love to hear about it!!

Yeah I have a bunch of trips for you to take. Winter or summer trips? It makes a big difference. Do you have any trad gear or anything? What about winter gear? Lots of preliminary questions

Im just looking for a good 3 day hike. Have all the gear I need, even for climbing. I am looking into the Ponca Wilderness & Buffalo River as a potential spring trip. What do you have for me?

I've always wanted to do this, but how do you get into it?

Do you just walk into REI or someplace like it and say "Hook me up with all the stuff I need to go hiking?"

    It's rather intimidating. Thoughts?

I'm planning on a winter presi traverse in february. If you want the biggest adventure possible in the northeast, I'd recommend it.

i got my start through training from some of the greatest mountaineers there are (alaskamountainguides.com) and worked 2 summers doing everything from rock climbing to week long backpacking trips to 23 day glacier excursions. I wouldn't go buy anything that you don't need right away. If i were you , I would look up a good trail nearby that you think you could handle for starts. Don't let the guys at REI sell you stuff you don't "might need". But do ask what he feels is apropriate for your trip.

If you have climbing gear, I am really in touch with the climbing community around ponca and sams throne area in Arkansas. We could meet in Springfield and head out for a 3 day trad/hiking trip. I love the Buffalo river

I go to school in Mo. I always try to get out and work for the summers somewhere in Co. if I can swing it. This summer I only made it out to the elk mtns. for a week after Phish at the rocks. Other than that I just went out on a few 3-4 day trips...nothing real special this summer. I am ready for some skiing this winter though. Are you a Co. guy?

nope, I'm in Alberta, so i have the rockies about 3 hours away, I'm not really a climber, but the wife and did a few scrambles and some backpacking. Hoping to get in some winter trips this year, skiiing and maybe some a bit of wimpy winter mountaineering.

To summit the presi peaks in the dead of winter is basically a game of russian roulette. Mt Washington is home to the worst weather in the world. literally. It has the highest recorded wind gusts ever.

Should be one hell of a time

From my quick read up after you posted about that, it looks like the traverse/summits would be pretty straightforward technically in ok conditions, but the weather makes it a serious challenge. I assume you must have some winter/cold experience to be tackling that?

Just bustin your balls for the "biggest adventure in the northeast" comment, thought it was funny. Who says that?

Yeah I do. And you're right. The majority of it is weather dependent.

I actually read it off one of the guide's websites. I didn't think it would be something that big either, as I'm not from the northeast. But apparently your chances of even getting to attempt it are like 1 in 3 based solely on the weather. But my two friends who work at the outfitter with me are gonna try it too. Should be awesome.
