ESPN layoffs commence today

http://www.sportingnews.com/other-sp...31b7pkw33i5wo0

"ESPN is laying off about 100 anchors, reporters, analysts and production staffers, sources tell Sporting News."

Ed Werder is the most notable name right now.

Reactions to this have been pretty amusing. Most of the public is saying "Who cares, fuck ESPN" and media people across the country are showing their support for those laid off and calling people who are happy about it shitty people.

I just love that no grey area can exist anymore. I am very happy ESPN is failing, but I also feel for those losing their jobs, but almost all will land on their feet. Im not breaking out the tissues for Ed Werder being unemployed for maybe 3 weeks.

I'm all for the downfall of ESPN, although I do enjoy local ESPN radio shows because they provide the kind of coverage no one else does/can. Werder is going to be on NFL Network maybe by the time the Draft hits the air tomorrow night. What sucks is a lot of good, educated, trained TV people are losing jobs while unbearable shitty ex-athletes converted to on-air personalities are safe.

This is what it's going to come down to... they are going to keep the shittiest ones and wonder why their doors are completely shut in a couple of years.

Interesting story to follow. They've been losing viewers and subscribers for a while now - all kinds of people are cutting the cord. ESPN2 is dead. FS1 has superior programming. And ESPN's dive into far Leftist politics certainly didn't work.

ESPN is never going to go under. They need to really re-prioritize but there will always be a base.

Sports talking head shows are dying. Its just what it is. Youve gotta bring more to the table than just droning on and on about a specific topic anymore.

I take issue with how ESPN has tried to determine what sports America cares about by always having an agenda. Their coverage is very biased and it made me stop watching SportsCenter years ago.

That said, I am sure working at ESPN was a dream job for many of those loosing their jobs, and that has to be rough. I do feel for them. As someone else said, I feel ESPN does a solid job with their radio products.

As a person who doesnt care much about the NBA, watching Sportscenter is totally useless.

I do like the new late night show with SVP, especially during hockey playoffs, but thats really all I watch.

They even suck on NFL sundays now. I have no interest in their pregame anymore, and even the wrap up show before the sunday night game is trash now, and I used to look forward to that on those days.

Everything is based around opinions and hot takes now and I think that was one of their greatest faults.

I agree with all of this. Also, maybe I am in the minority, but I have always found it ridiculous that the NFL draft gets the amount of coverage it gets. I fully understand the first and second round getting the airtime, but the coverage leading up to it and the coverage of the reaming 29304043 rounds has always been a major issue for me. Especially since it happens during NBA and Stanley Cup playoffs. As you mentioned, the NBA will still get its airtime, but the NHL second round seems to always lose all coverage because a sport that is not even playing has a draft. I am sick of that.

I really do feel bad for those losing their jobs, but I do agree that their formatting of hot takes and opinions probably played a large role in the decrease in popularity.

This is also more evidence of the TV sports bubble bursting. Look at how much ESPN pays to air MNF. Not a sustainable operation while you're losing subscribers and viewers like clockwork.

I don't like ESPn, I don't really watch, but as a fellow sports journalist this is terrifying. And the people fired are likely not the ones we see on TV and are those who do the actual hard work. Anyone happy these people are losing their jobs can go fuck themselves.

    Why is it terrifying?

People still are consuming sports and sports journalism, its just shifting away from the conglomerate.

Yeah man, it is rough. I love talking and writing about sports. I created a sports blog years ago and loved to write in it. It has always been a dream job idea for me. So I really do feel bad for everyone who lost their jobs today.

Over-saturation in a job market is scary for anyone in that profession. You like to think that years of hard work will make you safe, but unfortunately having the bigger salary is usually what makes you first on the chopping block. It will be interesting to see where everyone lands.

Like I just said in my post, it is possibly a sing of over-saturation in the job market for sports journalists. That is scary if you make your living that way.

I guess I tuned out before this? Last I saw they had employed Curt Schilling and Sage Steel, two pretty vocal conservatives

Yeah, they have that Disney money, they're fine. Disney will just restructure them until they find the success they're looking for

Its not as bad as his post made it seem. Basically its just Jemelle Hill who they for some reason have given the loudest microphone to in the entire network.

I know Michael smith used to write in boston, but i can't remember anything notable he's written. Also, i can't name a show he's ever driven ratings for.

The 6 is bad for the 2 minutes I watched it once. 6pm Sports Center was a joke anyway but they took that to a new level with that.

Schilling was fired for posting offensive public memes and saying stupid shit. Not surprisingly, Sage Steele did not do either of those and was not fired.

"Offensive" and "stupid shit" are just unmeasurable ways of shutting down differing opinions. You don't have to agree or like what he posted on his FB page, but he's got the right to do it. Also, depending on who you ask, Sage Steele HAS posted offensive and stupid shit.

Was planning on applying to ESPN nearing the end of school for me. Might not be the best idea now.

"The post showed an overweight man wearing a wig and women’s clothing with parts of the T-shirt cut out to expose his breasts. It says: “LET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you’re a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die.”

Eh thats pretty unarguably offensive and stupid.
