Re: ***Official Premiership, FA Cup, Carling Cup, Champions League etc. Thread***
0-0 at HT and the local Chelsea fans at Brit's Pub in downtown Minneapolis were quiet, if a little restless. The prospect of needing to cheer for an Arsenal result later that morning was both revolting and we knew deep down, a fool's errand. Everton had started the game well and we were lucky not to be down by a goal inside 2 minutes. Chelsea got themselves into the game but the final pass and finishing left a lot to be desired.
I could sense my people needed a calm and steady voice. "We're fine. Everton aren't getting the ball up to Lukaku and eventually, we will get the final ball right. Keep the faith."
An hour passed and still 0-0. The announcers started talking about how Chelsea had not played to a scoreless draw in a decade. My nerves got the better of me. I moved from my normal position at the end of the bar to the other side of the room. A couch next to the fireplace is my go-to spot when a change of fortunes is required.
Within 5 minutes the stars aligned and the football gods introduced the power of 10 men into the weak leg of former Barcelona star, Pedro. "Burrito" sent a thunderbolt past Maarten Stekelenburg that rippled the top of the net. An explosion of joy, relief, and sheer disbelief echoed around the pub. It was the moment we knew was coming despite the evidence of our chewed off fingernails.
Chelsea kicked on from there and the rest of the game felt academic. The Blues continued applying pressure and when the Captain, Gary Cahill, bumbled home the 2nd goal off a fine Eden Hazard free-kick, the celebration had changed from one of "Thank goodness" to one of "WE'RE GOING TO WIN THE LEAGUE!!!!" Costa, Cesc and Willian combined to give us a flashy 3rd and it was all she wrote.
Chelsea stared down their final big test and passed with flying blue colors. From here we play soon to be relegated Middlesborough at home, West Brom away, Watford at home and relegated Sunderland at home. Two of these 4 teams must take points from Chelsea in order for Tottenham to even have a chance.
Fat chance.
