Re: DM3MD on eBay

I apologize I came off harsh earlier. Honestly, in the end it's simply about opinion when we're talking that caliber of guitar. (other than the Chet. lol)

Dave actually signed the manufacturer sticker inside the sound hole, if you look closely you can see his autograph. Also, you get a DMSM card which Dave also signed himself, so when you buy this amazing piece of art/history you also get two Dave Matthews autographs, I had no idea a separate card came with it and it was such a pleasant surprise… got it framed right away..

    DM3MD ain't nothing special.

I've played one, then bought one and then traded it in.

814/914 is a better "playing" instrument.

Lighter, more comfortable, louder, brighter, easier to play (light strings)

If I ever own another DM3MD it will be to just hang on the wall.

So have you played a 914??? Love how people have opinions on guitars they probably have never even touched. I would take the Taylor DMSM over the martin any day of the week and twice on sunday.

I have played a 914ce, not the DM version though. Guitar center has them. They also have HD-28 at times and I've played that as well. My opinion stands.

Edit. It's not to say the DM Taylor isn't beautiful. It is, the inlays and wood work are excellent, what a beautiful guitar. I just prefer the simplicity and full tone of the Martin. It has a slightly deeper tone partially due to the action and wood, it also has a slightly more "bell" like tone which I enjoy. All preference though. Thehd28 is my ideal guitar so I am somewhat biased.

i own a 2002 taylor 310ce and a 1997 martin dc-1 about the same price range, and i always find myself going to the martin. the rich sound i get is amazing for recording. however, the taylor is great for playing live bc it has such a bright sound.

    i love em both!!!

They do play "those" 4 chords very well.

On a serious note. I would go with a Takamine over a low end Taylor, not sure about Martin. Depends on the wood and style.

I don't think anyone would say a "low end" Taylor is a bad, or even mediocre guitar. They're nicely built, in America, with quality woods. We are discussing some of the top manufacturing companies so "low end" while still applicable, is relative.

Which Taylor did you pay 1100 for?

I have the Guitar Center DSR Martin and love it. I have played many Taylors in stores and never cared for the sound until I found the GS Mini. I was looking for a second smaller bodied guitar and just couldn't put it down.

I have definitely warmed to the sound of Taylor guitars, however in the dread category, I don't feel that Taylor provides that punch that a Martin has.

BTW, to the OP, I have seen another DM3MD in sunburst, though it might have been this one, on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum awhile ago.

Regarding the OP: The serial number is in the pics. Given that, Martin should be able to tell you what the original finish on the guitar was. BTW, I know the seller (cpabolting) from other forums. I don't think he would knowingly misrepresent the guitar.

As for the rest of the thread: The Martin DM3MD doesn't really appeal to me, because I've never played a Martin that I liked. I can't decide if I want the Taylor DMSM or not. $3k is a lot for something I would never take out and play in public. I think my 614ce is about my limit, plus it sounds so great plugged in. Although, there is a DMSM for sale right now on the AGF....

Also, if you paid $1,100 for a 214ce, you got ripped off. Could have easily got a used 414ce for that.

Too late to edit, but now there's another DMSM on the AGF. Yikes, maybe I'll start a bidding war between the two and see how low they'll go. At $2,500 or so, my willpower (and my tax refund) would be out the door.

I don't think it's the AA system, I think it's just the older 9V system. They switch from AA to 9V in 2007. After a couple years of the 9V, I think they removed the extra switches that let you turn off some of the sensors. I think he just had them put in the 9V ES system with the extra switches.
