edit: there seemed to be mixed articles about what the writers ultimately wanted the ending to be, and I stand by the fact that they never really knew what they wanted to do with it.

They were not in purgatory for the entire series, for Christ's sake (not directed at you

Everything in the show that happened to them happened in their real lives. The Flash Sideways (which happened during the last season) was them joining together in the afterlife before moving on. So if somebody is really stuck in the purgatory idea it was only "purgatory" during season 6.
That was one of the main knocks on the finale, Christian's explanation. They laid it out plain and simple. That shot of the plane at the end had nothing to do with anything.
