What external hard-drive should I buy?

So I'm looking into getting a external hard-drive for my laptop. Looking online, it seems like Seagate and Western Digital are the top brands. I'm looking for something with 1TB or slightly less. I really don't have a price range but nothing too crazy. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

PS. It needs to be able to store a lot of this () type of porn.....

no, but seriously....

OP, thank you for making this thread. I want one for Christmas, and I don't have the slightest clue about the different brands.

No problem. I was actually reading over the Christmas wish list thread and came across some HDs. So actually, thank you for reminding me.

What kind of hard drive does your laptop have inside?

Go to my computer, find your hard drive icon, right click on it, select the hardware tab and tell me the brand.

My external is Western Digital. I bought it from www.newegg.com (maybe) 3 years ago. Still works like a champ.

This is what I have. Works fine for me despite it only has 3 eggs. It makes no sound for the most part.

I got this recently. If you need FireWire (I use it for video/music editing) I would recommend it but you could probably go cheaper if that's not essential and you're just using it for storage. It's real speedy and pretty much completely silent. It also looks cool, but as a result seems a bit less durable if you are planning on not just having it parked on a desk most of the time.

Go WesternDigital MyBook. I just got a 1TB for 99.00, fantastic deal and the best brand on the market.

I've had 2 Seagates die on me, won't buy again

This what worries me, however, the FreeAgent series seems a lot more reliable.

What is the online file storage called?

I failed to mention 2 things in my original post:

1.) I do have a Seagate 500MB that I bought alittle over a year ago. I don't have it in constant use. I think the "5 year warranty" was what really sold me on the product. That and I knew it was a "big name" when it came to HDs. I'm just looking to possibly upgrade and have another HD incase something happens or just to put more important items on it. Might seem rather pointless to have two (when one is basically brand new and works just fine) but....

2.) ....I have Best Buy gift cards and have no fucking clue what to spend them on. I've had one for over a year and the other is coming up on a year. I believe I read that they start losing value after a year. Buying a HD might be a spontaneous buy, but I don't want them going to waste. Hopefully some of these suggested HD's can be found there....or else I may just end up selling them and buying the HD elsewhere with the money.

Yet again, thanks for the help and keep it coming

BestBuy has good deals on HDs. I think WalMart has a better deal on the Western Digital MyBook, but when I bought mine a few weeks ago they matched Walmart's price. I'm pretty sure Best Buy will match any advertised price from other big stores.

I have a WD 'mybook' (500gb).. got it a few years ago.. when I get my netbook I'll probably get one of those 500gb ones that just powers off your computer. I like mine, works for everything I need.

I would just go to newegg, and look at their best deals. From there it's easy to determine by the reviews which ones are the sturdiest. It was shocking how consistently certain brands were reported to be shit, while others had no detractors.

Clitmuffin eh? Nice. Haven't heard before. I founded "cuntrocket" alittle over a year ago (at least I like to think I came up with it) and it's use has been going strong ever since. I'll throw in a few clitmuffins into the mix from now on. Plus thanks for your suggestion x3

With WD, either the reviewer seems to love it or hate it. Same goes for Seagate (which I own one).

This is my main focus. I don't care about any special 'this and that's,' I just want the damn thing to last. Seems like too often they either overheat or just crap out and die. I'm not wanting to pay x3 what I paid for the actual drive just so I can have someone bring my lost data back.

I got a 1TB Western Digital Elements a few months ago. I needed somewhere to store my music and it was taking up too much space on my laptop. It's great...got it off newegg.com. I think I got it for around $80 or $85.

    I have a 320 GB WD and I just got a 500 GB WD.

My 320 GB seems to be burning, but that was because I would leave it heating up for 8+ hours at a time. I found that if you have a small portable fan and turn it on facing the hard drive, it is completely fine.
