Cool RS Article from 96

Found this on Rollingstones web page. The blurb reads

In the current issue of Rolling Stone, Jenny Eliscu goes inside the Dave Matthews Band’s seventh studio disc, which is due in June. Take a look back at the band’s early days in our 1996 profile The Raging Optimism and Multiple Personalities of Dave Matthews, which finds Matthews hanging out at his hometown bar in Charlottesville, Virginia.

he's referring to haunted hollows there which is cool.

there are a lot of great points and insights in this article, especially looking back now. too bad rolling stone doesn't write like this anymore...

awesome read. I thought the part towards the end when Dave talks about feeling the pressure to come up with more hits and how he questions himself on how he came up with the riffs for WWYS and Recently was very interesting and a great view into his mentality back then.

it's funny....i remember reading the original artice in a rolling stone back then...i was a junior in H.S. in 1996 and I had been jammin to DMB for 2 years. That brought back some good memories of DMB back then and how that played into my life...good times

it was incredibly insightful. he saw then that the origins for his music was being lost by his changing life and that he'd have to find a new inspirations for it. a person/band's music in the creation process is a reflection of where they are in their life at that moment and dave knew he was losing that connection and had to re-define himself in some way.

At first they didn't receive great reviews, especially by Rolling Stone, I believe they called them a Blues Traveler or Hootie and The Blowfish knock off, and that they wouldn't last. Something to that accord. I don't give too much merit to critics, its just one person's opinion, just because they are paid to do it doesn't mean they are anymore right or wrong then you or I.

Also, I think the RS editor and cheif refused to put DMB on the cover for a while because he personally didn't like them, someone else verify this?

He plays the riff to "What Would You Say" and looks up. "See, I look at that and think, 'Where did I come up with that lick?' I've also been plagued by the song "Recently." I want to write another lick like that. I don't know what I was thinking. I wish I could figure it out. When I get one, I think 'Phew, I got another one I like.' "

Matthews then plays the chords to "#41," a song from Crash that reflects the new album's darker mood. "Remember," he sings in a voice abraded by too many cigarettes, too many days on the road, "when I used to play for all the loneliness that nobody notices now."

Awesome, awesome read. This part really intrigued me. Its funny to think that even Dave was thinking, 'where did that riff come from?' just like most of us on here think. I look at that part about #41, and realize he was feeling that loss of connecting to the music back in 1996. I can only imagine how he felt years later. I dont know, reading these old articles kind of puts things into perspective about DMB and Dave's writing or lack there of. I hope this album has let Dave get back to that place he used to be, and I hope I can enjoy it with them.

" Matthews prefers to play unplugged: "Electric guitar is not as much a percussive instrument as an acoustic is. I feel at home with an acoustic because it's hollow; it's got a drum quality."

    Awesome read for sure

I got really sad during the part about the band forming, talking about Carter and LeRoi growing up as basically neighbors

It has to still be so difficult for them...hell it's diffucult still for US and we're just fans...

Reading about Dave's feelings of creative inadequacy from back in '96 certainly puts the stories surrounding the Lillywhite Sessions in perspective.
