Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Pretty excited for this one. Spidey was always my favorite growing up. And I loved the take on the character in Civil War. Just gets the wise-cracking, chatty teenager thing down pat. Raimi made some great movies but I never felt like they nailed the character perfectly. Thought Garfield was a better Spider-Man to be honest, although those movies were universe-building dumpster fires.

I may skip this trailer then. That's what I've been doing lately. I'll watch the early teasers/first full trailer, and then avoid the other ones. It seems like they basically give away the whole movie.

    Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

It's curious that the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming has essentially laid out the film's entire plot, while the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still leaves much in the shadows. It's a possible indication that while both films may be taking place in Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fact that Sony is still involved with the wall-crawler means that things are being handled a little differently.

    Basically Blame Sony.

I enjoy blaming Sony. They're the reason casual fans can't take seeing a Spider-man movie seriously. It sucks.

I am starting to believe that Sony has no clue what the fuck they are doing.....let them keep running their mouth and see if any characters from the MCU pop up in the Homecoming sequel.

Still can't believe they basically showed the entire plot in that trailer yesterday.

Sony is a joke. They're probably going to reboot the franchise again.

I wonder if Marvel could do some kind of Spider-Boy or some variation to keep him in the MCU since Sony is obviously delusional.

If they really plan on not having Spider-Man remain in the MCU, then they should kill him off in Homecoming 2. Then Sony can build their future films around Miles Morales. They can position it as happening relatively in the same universe, with Peter having died, but then not have Miles actually cross over with any of the Avengers in his adventures so their would be no need for future collaboration. Would be a good way to build off the momentum of having Spidey in the MCU without actually having to rely on the MCU for future stories.

Of course, that doesn't address Sony's propensity to just make bad Spider-Man movies, but in theory it could work.

Works for me....although I am sure if there is a smart decision to make Sony will find a way to fuck it up.

Ahh, got it. No, just saying that if Sony and Marvel decide not to have Spider-Man in the MCU anymore, it feels like another Sony reboot (of Peter Parker) is a non-starter, but also continuing with Tom Holland and just not acknowledging the MCU anymore is also sort of weird, so it seems like Morales would be the direction Sony would want to take things in.

I have lowered my expectations on this one. I feel like the entire movie has been shown in the previews and it looks a little generic. I hope I am wrong.

I will be there opening night though. The international trailer beginning is really cool.

See, I feel like this is how Spider-Man is supposed to be. I think it comes at an unfortunate time as Marvel's last several movies have been played for laughs already, so it doesn't feel like a solid take on Spider-Man as much as it does just a typical Marvel offering, but they are nailing what Spider-Man is supposed to be like none of the previous incarnations have.

I agree with this 1000%. Most superheros are supposed to be "quippy" to some extent, it's sort of part and parcel for the genre, especially the books. Besides Deadpool I can't think of a "quippier" characater than Spiderman. They've sort of diminished the impact of those quips because the MCU has already beaten quips/snark to death.

But, you're right, this is exactly how Spiderman is supposed to be. From that perspective it seems like they nailed the character, though the plot seems pretty predictable/cliche. It's just unfortunate that it won't have the proper impact due to MCU going back to the same well 15 times in a row now.

    Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

In a way the plot had to be fairly small-fry. At this point in the MCU, with so many characters established, it's hard in a standalone film for the threat/conflict to be big in nature because if it were, it would be weird for the other Avengers not to show up to help. It has to be something that is either a little smaller in scale or else localized in a place where the other Avengers wouldn't be able to get too quickly. I guess most of the heroes that aren't Iron Man are in Wakanda at the end of Civil War, but still, the threat/plot feels appropriate for what a high schooler would be taking on given that there are more established heroes taking on the big threats.

But Spider-Man was always my absolute favorite growing up so I admittedly will probably enjoy this movie no matter what. I wish the tone of it was a little more unique to Spider-Man and not the same beats that Marvel has used for awhile, just so it stood out more as unique to the general public, but that won't damper my enjoyment of seeing Spider-Man adopt that tone because it's the absolute right tone for him.

I agree. I was really excited for this after the first trailer but now I'm not looking forward to it too much. They gave away too much of the plot. I feel like nothing will surprise me.

    Also, Tony Stark much?

Yeah the first trailer for this looked sooooo good and I feel like every trailer has slowly decreased my excitement. I like Michael Keaton as well but he looks at least from previews to be such a cookie cutter villain.

I guess I am still mad about them ruining the boat thing in the second trailer.

I don't mind a lot of Tony Stark but I wonder if he is actually in it a lot or if that is just how they want to market it. (AKA IRON MAN IS IN THIS THAT IS WHY IT IS OK THAT IT IS ANOTHER NEW SPIDERMAN!!!!!!)

    It was known thing.

That being said it's not something I'd have shown. Honestly I put a lot of the blame on Sony because this isn't a real issue with other MCU movies.

Movie looks like a lot of fun. It's more of a character development than origin story, which I like.
