Why such hatred for the Lovely Ladies?....

I was just wondering why so many people give them such a bad rap? I don't think that they are bad at all....but that's my opinion. I just recently got a copy of 7/29/01 and Angel is just such a smooth fucking song with their contribution.....

I think that people just got sick of them. They were not a good guest to have all the time because they sang on too many songs that they didn't belong. They sounded good on songs like Stay, JTR, Angel, Long Black Veil, and some more. But they absolutely ruined some other songs like BOWA, TSB, Minarets, etc.

    They sang on Minarets? bleh

I think they were very good. The only problem is... the songs are different without them. And in some ways better.

For instance, Stay is great with them. But the way Dave sings it (especially the end) without them is great too... but unfortunately, it was somewhat of rarity to hear the song played without them.

Some songs like BOWA, where the band's backup vocals are perfect, the LL took away the layering effect that the band usually has by overpowering that part... and making it too complex and noticeable (distracting).

#36 was good with and without them, as is/was Everyday. Personal preference though for me is old #36, before the Ladies... and this year's Everyday, without them.

I certainly don't hate them... they're very talented and definitely were a great guest. I'm just glad to see the band touring as "just the band" again...

As for other full-tour guests... Tim and Butch, specifically, seem to fit better with the band and the band's sound... and therefore most people wouldn't mind (some would love it) if they never played a show without one or both of them.

Your referring to the ladies right? Cause most poeple consider TIm and Butch like honary members of the band.

    this is a
    a good question....

i think everybody already said it................
    the ladies are good for
    angel they make the song
    worth being heard
but that is just cause angel blows
other then that the are a major distraction
i think they ruined jtr....... 36..... space between..............
and thank god i never heard them
    on best of what's around
i didnt even know they were on that song what a bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    it was usually
a letdown when them came in.............
like on 36 on pbs for example

i saw dave play stay without them once in 98
and it was amazing hearing him sing the high part at the end was really cool
    so even that song
    is better off left alone....

odds are the smaller places they play the less chance for their return cause
they really starting come out to add something to the stadium shows in dave's mind
even though we all know that that was very un- necessary............

    My opinion:

Lovely ladies are VERY talented at what they do, no question about it. I just don't think the sound of backup singers fits with the overall tempo and musicianship of DMB. Sure, in some cases, they are a great addition, but in other cases, I think they slow down the pace of shows a ton.

My other major problem is that their appearance limits the setlists. There are probably only 15-20 songs that they really work well on. DMB is not going to pay them to sing on 3-5 songs each night, so we will get 8-10 of those same 20 songs at every single show. (true Reflections and Stay are the best examples)

I personally enjoy the setlists MUCH more without them, they tend to be more diverse and higher energy.

But, to say "they suck" seems inaccurate to me.

And what else is a shame are the songs that aren't played now that the ladies aren't with them. JTR, BOWA, Stay, and Angel. The latter can be played sparingly, but really it would be nice to have it in every once in a while for variation. And Stay w/o the ladies is very cool, saw it 4 times in 98 w/o them and it rocked every time.

every song that the ladies have ever sang on i think sounds better when it is just the band...36 is better without them, so i Long Black Vail and anything else. They drag on songs way too long. Stay, for example, is actually a decent song when they aren't there.

I was referring to Tim and Butch when I said most people would be perfectly happy if they *never* played a show *without* one and/or both of them.

Basically the same thing you said...

The Lovely Ladies however, should simply be guests...

Although right now it's entirely possible they won't be around again. The band seems pretty happy with their own sound right now, and seeing as there was no sign of them this whole year, they may well be gone for good.

I don't recall all of the particulars but I am almost positive one of the original LL was indeed arrested. I am also pretty sure it was after they were done touring with the band.

As for Bluecow, I am so surprised at seeing that poster's name. I wonder what he doing these days. He was one of the most popular posters on the DMB nancies.org that I spent a ton of time on and even "met" my wife in 2002 before coming here. He had a huge post total and was very political and was active in many threads. He had lots of haters but also plenty who respected his knowledge/style/etc. If there any old time Nancies still around here, I am sure you'd remember him. I believe his name was Adam.

They're on the Minarets from the bonus disc of Live Trax 31. Only during the outro though

My main issue is the stale, boring, repetitive setlists. As if the band didn't have enough issues with being called 'lazy' sometimes when it comes to their setlist diversity, the LL have taken it to a whole new level this tour. I literally walked out midway through YMDT at SPAC N1 - worst SPAC show I've ever been to, thanks in large part to those biatches being there.

His name was Anand. He posted on Phishhook for a long time after he left nancies, but he hasn't been on there in forever. I lost touch years ago, but he was always a good guy in my book.
