Agree on Rozy but I'd be more than happy to give a 2 year contract to Oduya. Outside of Saad he is the player I want back most.

Yes, clearly agree that Seabs is the one you must keep because the Hawks' D depth is questionable going into next year. Please do not re-sign Rozy. And I am OK with Oduya leaving; no reason to give multi-year deal to a guy who will be 34 years old when the season starts.
I think moving Bickell without retaining salary will be easier than some thing. There are teams trying to reach the cap floor. He's a semi-proven vet with tons of Stanley Cup playoff experience, and has performed in the playoffs before.

Teams on the fringe paid for guys like Burish, Stalberg, etc. before after a Cup win, someone will try on Bickell. Preds need to reach the floor, and the Coyotes are about $18 million from the floor.

In fact, Dreger is reporting that's exactly the case:

I liked the AHL way better. 5 minutes of 4 on 4, and then 3 minutes of 3 on 3.

5 minutes of just 3 on 3 makes the entire thing gimmicky.

Would playoff style OT in the regular season be awesome? Or would it be overkill? Obviously it will never happen, so just a hypothetical.

Just happy for change. NHLPA is stupid. I really don't get it. But they also shot down the original realignment because of imbalance, only to OK a different form of imbalance.

Overkill. Games could go on forever and now we look forward to ot in playoffs. Plus the NHLPA didn't want an extra 3 minutes of OT so....

Way overkill. NHLPA turned down 4-on-4 for 5 minutes, then 3-on-3 for 3 minutes, then shootout...because of 3 extra OT minutes. The idea of "play until someone scores" in the regular season is done.

I wouldn't want it either. Just way too much. It's fun in the playoffs because of the do or die mentality, but for a game in February? No thanks.

    Re: The NHL Thread

I think the "eliminating shootouts" thing goes way beyond that one extra skater. We might see marginal improvement, but I honestly think this isn't a real fix for the situation.

Until we address these ridiculously massive goaltenders with these ridiculous pads, we're going to have an issue. Scotty Bowman was talking about it, and I've felt this way for a long time too. Defensive strategy has shifted more and more towards collapsing around the middle of the ice, leaving the points open. The idea behind this is that the neutral zone was shrunk a couple years ago, and the NHLs thinking was more space for offenses to work and easier zone entry. It seems to have backfired though, in that now teams still trap the neutral zone, causing a dump, then just keep play to the points and the boards. They employ these massive goalies with these pads, and then just try and get in shooting lanes and block shots.

It's one of those things that you just don't know until you put into practice. There's so much board play now adays, then move the puck to the blue line and have them fire a shot and hope for a deflection. There's so many skill players, but we're seeing less and less goals every year because more teams are implementing this type of strategy.

Until we shrink the pads and increase the goal size, this isn't going to change. Do those things, you'll see less shootouts and more goals. 0.5"-1" on each side and the cross bar. Shrink goalie pads a little, make the goalie sweaters more tapered so they don't stop pucks on their own.

I think the shrinking of the neutral zone was a mistake. Until something is adjusted there, this is all just putting a bandaid on the issue.

I'm not a fan of 5 minutes 3-on-3, either, but I certainly don't think leaving it alone was the answer.

The PA would never go for it but I think the ideal solution would be either 10m 4v4/10m 3v3-tie or 20m extra period-tie. Shootouts are just silly, way more silly than just letting a game be a tie.

That's too long. I think the AHL solution is the perfect compromise.

Shootouts aren't going away. People need to get over that and move on from ties.
