i don't think we'll ever see it die out completely. it may be vastly different than what we know it as today, but it will still be there. if anything, i think it will revert back to the early days. it won't be the big production it is today with pre-race concerts, etc.
if it does really start to die out, i think you'll see 20 car races and a much shorter schedule. one race a year at each track for like 20 race seasons. it'll turn back into the novelty it was 50-70 years ago.
limiting the schedule cuts the supply, which will raise demand. instead of having the option to go to one of two races, its either you go or you don't. cutting cars will allow sponsors who are not willing to pay $15 million a year pay part of that for part of the schedule, moreso than we see now. pretty much every car will have 3 or 4 sponsors over the course of the season.
i think there will always be people interested because people will always like fast cars and powerful engines. the sport is incredibly safe, so there won't necessarily be a loss of interest from drivers like there is with football players in the NFL.
NASCAR will just become a secondary sport, like lacrosse. everyone knows its a thing and the people who go love to go, but it doesn't have mass appeal. thats if it can't figure out how to get more interest.
