I think the Lillywhite Sessions is overrated due to the fact that is was scrapped for Everyday. I think if it was released as originally planned, it would be highly regarded, but it wouldn't have the status it holds with many hardcores now. This unfinished product should not be anyone's favorite album. To speculate what it could have been is all fine and good, but we as a group of fans put it on a pedestal that it doesn't really deserve because of what we wanted it to be

Interesting. I think it's so good unfinished that I can't even imagine how much I'd love it if it was done.

I love Mercy > OOMH. Said it in another thread but wanted to post it here

They should put Louisiana Bayou back in regular rotation. Love that song, especially on the Piedmont Park release.

i think black and bluebird got this band back on track. I'm not a huge fan of BW, and AFTW is ok, a lot better than BW. But when i first heard Black and Bluebird all I could think was "They're back", and I really do love all of the new stuff since AFTW, I think the band is in a really good place and LP9 is gonna be way good.

I think musically the band sounds just fine very tight but I believe that lyrically Dave has gotten extremely lazy and complacent with what he writes and or settles for as a completed version of a song. Ex. Drunken soldier musically is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful example of how tight and powerful the DMB can be as musicians and then Dave settles on some of the shittiest lyrics he's ever thrown at a song. Maybe he's run out of things to say.

I’m prepared for heavy backlash, but...

If Dave and Co. decided to never play The Dreaming Tree again, I’d applaud them.

I felt the same exact way when I watched the first performance of it. It only took about 5-10 seconds of hearing it to feel that way too. The guitar riff, the odd time signature, carter, to me it sounded immediately like DMB from about 2002. That song means a lot to me personally, but it’s become one of my favorite DMB songs. Seeing it at The Gorge in 2016 was a really special moment.

Yea I don't get it, I love b&bb. Maybe because of the way I interpret it personally, but it's miles ahead better than anything on aftw.

I ask the same question all the time. It’s about as DMB-sounding as it gets these days. For all the hate Dave’s lyrics get I find these to be nothing fantastic, but they certainly harken back to his early playful lyric writing. Having fun with word play and how they can fit within an odd time signature and rhythm. Some say it’s a snoozer, but then why aren’t any slow songs from before 2002 ever considered snoozers? You could argue that Lover Lay Down draws the same amount of energy out of a show as Black and Bluebird. It’s nice to have a few minutes of relaxing mellow music in the middle of an energy filled set. Under the stars, with good friends, or with my wife on a nice summer night. That last 2 minutes of Black and Bluebird is heavenly.

Never liked it, so just youtube'd it, watched the Letterman performance (which we were at). Liked it a little bit, able to follow along with the lyrics on the youtube page. Lyrics are very busy, not interested in most of it (celestial bodies, butterflies, birds, etc), no crescendo, nothing passionate for me.

Yes agreed. I always make the argument on here that DMB fans tend to judge songs too much by how they work live. I don’t want to hear B&BB at a concert but I enjoy the shit out of it when I’m relaxing listening to music. The Last Stop? Not as good in that scenario.

Just wondering how do you feel about the songs on aftw? I realize B&bb isn't a song that would have tremendous live energy but it at least appears lyrically some thought went into it. Musically, Tim isn't shredding and the horns are smooth and jazzy not the typical blaring competition.
After I an album littered with cliché saving the world nonsense and a few more odes to pussy munching, b&bb just seems like vintage dmb.

If Cornbread had even decent lyrics, it would be a good song. Love the music but good lord do the awful lyrics kill it.

B&BB is just a mess. Not a good song at all. I've said this a few times, but if Samurai Cop is the best song Dave's written lately then he's truly lost the magic.
