OK whatever... my point isn't to say that you liked dreamgirl. Just that it's OK to be open to the fact that this album will grow and that it isn't possible for it to be Crash or BTCS or UTTAD at this time because it has not had the time to breath.

Legendary music doesn't happen immediately.

I'm done trying to convince people of the greatness of this album. It's futile

Only time will tell. In the mean time, I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

What these songs turn into live will be the key to their success IMO.. Right now some of them need a lot of work IMO..

I still enjoy the Roi jam at the end of the ilve versions, too. In general, Roi on the soprano is my happy place.

Hmmm, I don't think that way at all about the first 3+LWS. As soon as I heard the way those albums flowed musically and "productionly"(yeah, I said it) instant legends of studio masterpieces. And Yes, they did have a fan based buzz just like Grux. It was word of mouth from loyal fans who heard them live for under the table. I think you don't know what you are talking about. Not trying to hate on you, I just know when the 1st 3 came out, I was already like "holy shit", why isn't there anything else like this in the world, and then you realize, because they are that badass and the songs had a lot of roadtesting and Lillywhite is a master at retaining sounds.

I'm not sure if I ever really liked Crash. I always loved all of the songs, most of them just sound too weak on that album though.

really ? i just finished listening to it again and its so beautiful. I like that the studio cuts do not have the same urgency and development as the music live. it makes an etherial experience to listen to it in the car or in a good stereo and it's generally raw, which can be good.

Exactly. DMB songs should be gauged on how well they translate and evolve into a live setting. I feel like that's how most people will judge these new songs. Some will never really change because there isn't much space for additions. Spaceman is a song that I like a lot on the record, but in my opinion doesn't translate too well to the stage, and dunno how much better it's gonna get. On the other hand, Why I Am was better than the studio version the first time it was even played, in my opinion.

FWIW I like some of the songs on the album. Let You Down, Cry Freedom, Proudest Monkey, and Say Goodbye. I'm not saying it's crap.

Not #41? Not being critical, just asking. IMO that's the best studio cut of them all.

Maybe I just can't help but compare it to #41 live. #41 on listener supported feels like a dream, I get all kinds of pictures of fireworks, waterfalls, nights on the beach, etc etc in my head when listening to it. The Crash version just doesn't do that for me.

I was far from thinking BTCS was great and 99% of fans I knew had the same reaction. DDTW was killed as the first single -- people were not fans. BTCS was great, but not first listen great by any means. I'm not sure what you are remembering. YOU may have been like holy shit, but after UTTAD and Crash, which were loved, the reaction to BTCS was far from glorious. It took a while to grow on fans. Crash is a different story since those songs had been played live a lot before the album dropped. Most of it was not new material -- and same with UTTAD.

tLWS cant be compared becasue in this because compared to Everyday, everything was great at that point. Althought tLWS were/are great.

And Lillywhite is overrated. Yeah I said it. And I've been around since day one... or year two.

    My thoughts exactly.

On someone else's point, many of the Big 3 songs were legendary before they hit the album. Halloween, Ants, Tripping Billies, Jimi Thing, Say Goodbye, etc. All well known songs (among fans from that era) before UTTAD was released. So saying Crash (1996) is great because it has a studio version of Tripping Billies or Two Step (played as early as 1992) is false hype to me. I would judge Crash (or any of the Big 3) by a) the new songs on the album or b) a different (or substantially better) version of an older song, like 41 Police becoming #41.

In that light, I would definitely rank Big Whiskey up in the Big 3, probably behind BTCS, in terms of creative output of DMB. If people are ranking it for pure listening pleasure, I would probably put it behind BTCS and UTTAD for studio albums.

I had to take a break from Big Whiskey for a few days. I was having trouble getting used to the new sound. So I listened to Busted Stuff for a bit. Got back to BW today and I'm liking it a lot more.....See what time apart can do??

I mean, I think it's kind of unnecessary to go on about whether this album measures up to the infamous Big 3. If it does for people, then great. If it doesn't, oh well. Still a fine album, and maybe next time they'll make the best album they've ever made. It seems like alot of people are really, really concerned with it measuring up to these albums, when instead it could just be the 4th or 5th best album of the band's career which could continue on for awhile. It's not a mark against the album if it's not as good as BTCS; the band has quite a few albums not as good as that album, and some of them are very very good in their own right.

Umm, did you even read them yourself? Those reviews are very positive about the show.

You seem to be alone in your BTCS hating tangent.

Well, it was an instant orgasm for my ears.

Halloween, The Stone, Crush, Dreaming Tree, Pig, Spoon and all the in-between teases were so cool to me. The Last Stops Literal music stops were so awesome, then the band exploded into awesome Dave Yelling Chorus!!!! AAGGGGGhhhh!!!!

The Stop at the end of the Stone is my favorite sound in the world with the violin floating me away like a dead leaf on a suttle stream.

You Are Fucking Wrong and Big Whiskey is good, but not BTCS good.

I didn't say they were bad reviews. But if that set was played now, people would bust nuts in their pants. However a lot of those were EXACTLY like reviews from people seeing shows now. "Son X was standard... song Y was awesome. Song Q was just like the album... no one really new what it was.... " I love BTCS -- my only point is that the reception when it came out was similar to the BW reception. There were many people that were unsure about the new sound.

I remember having a problem with "Crash" at one point, back when I was young and really impressionable. I read a scathing review from an "old school" fan that complained about how weak the album was. Fast forward several years and I read a follow-up by the same guy, recanting his original review. This was on the website that was called Blue Water Baboon Farm. Back in the day.

I think Crash is possibly the single most important DMB album to date. UTTAD is phenomenal and wonderful but... Crash is the bedrock, the solid core. It's just musically all over the place, chock full of epic songs and impossibly beautiful songs, it sounds fantastic, and it ends with Proudest Monkey. Yes, that's a reason to love it right there. Listen to that track all the way down to the final little plucks on the guitar strings, barely audible... it's such a purely joyful piece of music.

Look at the monkey, for cryin' out loud!

Probably has to do a lot with the fact the band has given us complete shit for a long time now.

That same fact probably has a lot to do with overwhelmingly positive reaction to Big Whiskey.
