They also reference how the colts had to deal with blackouts many years ago...which is true...but the old dome held what, 40,000 people? That's a substantial difference compared to 350K. The IMS could choose to lift the black out any year they want to, but they don't.....It just seems like it's VERY difficult to get that event sold out....so why not put it on TV live so that maybe people can watch it in real time on TV and possibly attract more people to the event in future years?

Im with you on this, its a pathetic historical tradition for the track. Well wouldn't call it tradition but whatever. IMS is a bit like baseball and has been terrible with transitioning and changing with the times. Only the last 3-5 years has new day to day management has brought the place back from obscurity honestly. When new TV contracts come up in the next two years, I'm sure IMS/Indycar will finally try and negotiate enough money so they can lift the blackout and never incorporate it. Until then though they have to go with the status quo of saying if you come and sell the place out, then the blackout will be lifted.
Sidenote: with the new renovations to the track and the renewed massive interest, even if you are not a racing fan at all, it really is a bucket list item to go to. Especially for those who live in the midwest. Not many instances can you go to such an historical event where the drinking starts the night before, lasts 24 hours and 350,000 people go to attend, concerts go on all weekend and oh not to mention the biggest race in the world happens, which also happens to be the best racing(for those who care) in the last 5 years. Its just an incredible thing to be apart of.
Most people should relate to the "experience" hype at least which is talked about a ton with DMB shows.
