Re: So You're bored on the boards? Make a setlist!
I just came back from Firefly, first time I'd ever been to a Festival which was pretty cool. Saw many bands for the first time, and I know many bands play a "greatest hits" sort of set, partially b/c many of them have shorter sets (an hour, maybe 1.5-2 hours if a headliner) than usual, but also b/c so many fans aren't there just to see THEM play.
Made me think: even though DMB has been one of the most popular live acts in last 20+ years AND although they have played any festival shows before, what would a "festival" set look like?
*(I realize some of their festival shows within the last few years -- particularly Bonnaroo 2010 -- haven't been all too different from that specific year's sort of setlist, but now that some time has passed . . . and also AFTW has come out ... I wanted to see what a "festival set" mght look like.
*One other caveat/rule I made, arbritarily I realize: 2 songs from every studio album had to be made, and I included RTT in that, so 2 from RTT, 2 from UTTAD, 2 from Crash all the way up to AFTW. I also allowed for one cover and one "unreleased" (not on a studio album, ie Granny, Samurai Cop, Bob Law, Shotgun, etc.)
So, knowing they'd have to include two tracks from each album, here's what I thought would be a really good "festival set" -- both appealing to a broad, casual fan audience yet also appealing to hardcores (I think so):
Stay
Granny
One Sweet World
Funny the Way It Is
Big Eyed Fish -->
Bartender
Belly Belly Nice
Too Much
Recently (Some People Do intro, Pretty Pretty Girl jammed out outro)
The Space Between
You Might Die Trying
Crush
Why I Am
Warehouse
Everyday
Louisiana Bayou
Two Step
____________
Rooftop
Watchtower -->
Ants Marching
