Sky going for stages now, Porte just didn't have it today. Nibali in the drivers seat, but 2nd on down is up in the air. Real curious to see if a French rider can make the podium. The French riders and teams have had a great tour thus far and have a few people placed close to the top to get on the podium.

I wouldn't say he's making the headlines. The press are the ones asking the doping questions without having any real reason too, (besides the history of doping in the sport). I don't think those questions are worthwhile anymore. Of course it still happens, just like any sport, but the days of it being widespread are gone. I would be shocked if we see another Tour winner banned for doping.

Poor Richie. Got thrown into the bright lights when he just wasn't ready. I could tell that his team didn't have much confidence in him. When Froome crashed out and they were asked about Porte taking over, their reaction wasn't "Yes! Of course he's ready! We're winning the Tour!" It was "I guess we'll see..."

I give him all the credit for charging ahead and pushing his body. Yet you can't just throw a domestique to the GC front and expect him to pull it out, and SKY knew that. As the commentators have been saying all Tour, it takes years to groom a GC contender let alone a winner. Plus you have to buildup a team to support that rider to make it happen.

Man, Nibali looked tough today. Hung around all day and then just waited to pull away.

Van Garderen looked solid today, too.

I wish Tejay would've went with Nibali and Peraud when they attacked at the 4km mark. He could've picked up time on the guys ahead of him and inched closer to the podium.

Nibali has won the Tour with these last 2 days. Valverde cracked today and now his lead of 4:37 seems insurmountable. With that said, there are still 3 very hard mountain stages in the Pyrenees next week and the penultimate time trial where lots of shit can happen.

Yeah, I can't see how Nibaldi doesn't win, barring a crash or some sort of freak injury. He made the climbs yesterday and today look pretty easy.

Last full stage today, then the TT tomorrow. Nibali has it wrapped up, over 7 min lead. But the race for 2nd and 3rd will be battled out by 3 riders tomorrow. Should make for a decent final day of racing, before the parade into Paris on Sunday.

    Not sure why?

Nibali has been very impressive this Tour, granted he did into with the favorites pulling out.

Kind of a boring tour with a few interesting moments, wrapping up today. Better fight for 2nd and 3rd than first, with the way Sky dominated.

Yeah, one of the biggest sporting events on the planet is still a thing.
Based on official records, Froome is the first back-to-back winner since Indurain.

I used to be bored senseless by bicycle riding, still am to an extent though I do pay attention to some of them. An old friend of mine from high school is legally blind and represent the US in the Paralympics doing the triathlon with her guide and dog. So basically she rides bikes, swims and runs and she kicks ass at it and is currently ranked #6 in the world.

Once Froome attacked on the downhill in Stage 8, and no one kept up, the race was over. Bring on the cross winds a few stages later and the writing was on the wall. You know he is going to eat up time in the two TTs and, as you pointed out, the Sky team just dominated and controlled the rest of the stages. They pounded out such an incredible tempo that when it was the time to attack, no one had the legs at that point.

I enjoy the Giro and Vuelta more these days because the race is less predictable then the Tour. Those race organizers setup the races different, and truth be told, most teams are not bringing their A game/teams so it leaves the door open for more attacks and unpredictable racing.

yeah, agreed to all of that. I enjoyed the one day spring classics a bunch too this year.

I kept being frustrated with Quintana not attacking, but I don't think he could.

Orica-Bike Exchange is rapidly becoming my favourite team - check out their backstage pass videos on Youtube if you haven't - the Paris-Roubaix video is so good.
And the addition of lots of on-the-bike GoPro footage has really been adding to the experience lately.

    That's impressive.
Yeah, on paper watching someone ride a bike should be boring as hell, but I can really get into it. I think mostly because I do it myself (poorly, slowly and and non-competitive) so I watch from that perspective.

Tour starts today. Not expecting much, only a handful have a shot, with Froome being the clear cut favorite. Curious to see if this 'new' route setup impacts the racing and invigorates the overall quality of the Tour.

about my thoughts. Hopefully a little more uncertainty this year but more likely just Sky domination. Blow for Movistar to lose valverde on day one, does not help Quintana be more competitive.

The Sagan thing was kind of BS and makes the flat stages a lot less interesting without Cavendish and him.

Watched the Porte crash live and it looked so nasty. Read the he fractured his clavicle and pelvis, along with a ton of road rash. All things considered, and crashing while going 45 mph and hitting a rock barrier, think he came out ok. Also big props to Dan Martin, the guy that was taken out in the crash and crashing again down the mountain, for getting back up and only finishing 2:00 behind the leaders.

As for Sagan, agree. While it looked like the elbow did come out, it was not go block or hit Cav. It was so Sagan could stay upright after being bumped and cutoff as the sprint shifted right along the barrier. Guess the upside, maybe a French cyclist will actually wear a leaders jersey on to the Champs-Élysées in a fortnight.

In a lot of ways, the race is still very much the same from when Lance and USPostal/Discovery rode rough shot over the Le Tour. Singular dominate team and rider (Sky and Froome) with a few other riders and teams taking their chances when they can to knock off the top guy. Outside of a few tense moments, the race is really controlled by the dominate team creating a fairly benign racing environment.
