    Dunkirk

I liked it a lot, though I am not sure how strongly it would hold on repeat viewings. There's a mix of both Jesse and Davis's reviews in my overall thoughts on it - on one hand, it was relentlessly intense from the first gun shot and never let go until the fade to credits. In terms of Nolan getting me to feel exactly how his characters felt and putting me right in the setting, this could arguably be his most accomplished work. My whole body just felt clinged to my seat that whole time and I could hardly take a breath. On the other hand, I agree with Jesse that I wasn't terribly invested in any of the characters. The movie aces on a visceral level, but in terms of genuine emotional investment, I don't think it quite hit the mark. But I don't agree that an additional half hour is the solution to this problem. I'm with Bo, in that a tighter Nolan film is something I wholly welcome, and I think the better alternative would have been to just pick one of the perspectives and develop those characters on a deeper level. There's a lot that could have been done with both Hardy's story or Rylance's story to make each one a standalone film, especially the former. I think it would have been very good, if not great if that's the direction that was decided. But at least it was still pretty good. I'm feeling a 7.5 - 8/10.

    The Big Sick

I really enjoyed this one a lot - all the performances were on point, I deeply cared about the romance and actively rooted for them as a couple, and it hit the perfect balance of comedy and drama. The one unfortunate thing though is that it was on the pathway to taking the No. 1 spot of the year, but the last act really could have used some scissors and trim about 15 minutes off the runtime. They just really dragged out that conclusion and there are three different scenes that probably should have been combined into one to help the pacing of that last act. But it by no means ruined the movie and the very last scene was a great way to close it out - I just wish they could have landed that last act way stronger than they actually did. With that being said, it's still comfortably No. 2 of the year with Logan remaining king. 9/10.

appreciated the take on the character, and the action was well done. story was a little weak (especially the villains). I'm not sure how canon everything was but I'm kinda surprised x-men fans didn't take umbrage with some of the story choices

r-rated action was worthwhile to show, but they CLEARLY were trying to fit as many "fucks" in there as possible. it was actually distracting

Ghost in the Shell (2017). 7.0(7.5 maybe)/10. Critics panned it way to hard. Pretty loyal to the source material but still trys to do it's own thing. Great soundtrack and very well acted.Excellent move visually. Doesn't hold a candle to the original anime though.

I thought it was three quarters of a good horror story. Got silly in the last part. Became a typical chase movie.

Really good film but overly methodical at times.. Also a little too dramatic at times but very profound and thought provoking overall.

Damn, was I the only one that didn't like War for the Planet of the Apes? That movie was so disappointing and I really liked the previous 2 movies. The climax was nothing but a series of all too convenient cliches. It was basically an action movie that was directed by someone who had only ever directed heavy dramas with zero action experience or it at least came across that way. With a movie title with "War" in it, there wasn't much warring going on. I'm all for emotional development and movies require it, but this series finale deserved more than just that.

It was surprisingly slow and rather underwhelming considering I liked the previous ones. The Colonel was pretty cliché and the climax was pretty uninspired. It's like they applied a formula because they didn't know what else to do and then crossed their fingers that their ability to inspire sympathy for the apes would carry the day. The more I think about it the worse it gets.

I had some issues with Apes but overall I appreciated the depth and the willingness to explore some really profound issues when they could've easily made a shallow special effects extravaganza (see Spider Man)

Just watch No Country and I am torn on my feelings of it. I liked a good majority of it but the ending was not my cup of tea. They build up this show down between Bardem and Brolin and we get to see none of it. Also, was I wrong to expect TLJ character to be the one to Tbone Bardem at the end?

No Country is a movie that gets better with repeat viewings in my opinion. I wasn't totally sold on it when I first saw it, but it stuck in my mind. Eventually bought it on blu-ray and every time I rewatch it I am very satisfied with it.

I thought it was a solid flick. The timeline confused me though and it was like the same almost drowning scene over and over again. Also why didn't Hardy just bail out when he was over everyone on the beach, just coasted and landed in enemy territory.

I thought the story was way too one sided. They clearly wanted you to hate the humans and love the apes. What I think would have been much more interesting is to spend maybe the first quarter of the movie showing the Colonel with his son before he "went rogue." Make the audience sympathize with the Colonel and the remaining humans who have been devastated by the simian flu. Then the Colonel becomes a 3 dimensional character. We already have sympathy for the apes from the previous 2 movies, so it wouldn't take much screen time to gain sympathy for the apes once the story moves back to them. The interesting dynamic would have been for the audience to have sympathy for both the humans and the apes and have that conflict in the audience's mind be a major focal point. Then the "war" would have felt a lot more devastating and meaningful if the audience doesn't want either side to lose, but one of them ultimately does. The movie as it was made was so much "good" (apes) vs. "evil" (humans), so cut and dry and one-dimensional. A more interesting story would have been "good" (apes) vs. "good turned evil" (humans). Maybe you could argue that premise was setup with the first 2 movies, but then don't introduce new one-dimensional characters in the final movie that weren't in the previous movies.

I got the sense that bailing out of planes in that time period (WWII) wasn't a very safe practice. I thought that's why the other guy didn't bail out either.

Arguably the best movie of the millennium. I had a cardiac event watching that movie. You can spoiler the response, but which half did you think was the dream? (I'm always into other people's theories.)

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

    Dunkirk - 7.5/10

The movie was pretty close to what I was expecting based on when I first saw the trailers. I wondered how they would make a movie out of people simply stuck on a beach. Using the multiple timelines helped create a story that was more interesting, but it still was just about people trying to get off a beach. I was surprised that no time was spent showing the German side and only painted them as the faceless enemy. Once the music started at the beginning of the movie, it never stopped. Not once for the entire movie. It certainly helped elevate the intensity of what was happening, but it makes me doubt if that intensity would have been there without the music. If that's true, then it would tell me that there isn't much of a story if it's only elevated because of the music. The movie was well made for what it was trying to get across, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece as others have called it. There was essentially zero character development. Maybe the premise of the movie being "survival is heroism" just wasn't as interesting to me as it was to others.
