Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Dunkirk
I liked it a lot, though I am not sure how strongly it would hold on repeat viewings. There's a mix of both Jesse and Davis's reviews in my overall thoughts on it - on one hand, it was relentlessly intense from the first gun shot and never let go until the fade to credits. In terms of Nolan getting me to feel exactly how his characters felt and putting me right in the setting, this could arguably be his most accomplished work. My whole body just felt clinged to my seat that whole time and I could hardly take a breath. On the other hand, I agree with Jesse that I wasn't terribly invested in any of the characters. The movie aces on a visceral level, but in terms of genuine emotional investment, I don't think it quite hit the mark. But I don't agree that an additional half hour is the solution to this problem. I'm with Bo, in that a tighter Nolan film is something I wholly welcome, and I think the better alternative would have been to just pick one of the perspectives and develop those characters on a deeper level. There's a lot that could have been done with both Hardy's story or Rylance's story to make each one a standalone film, especially the former. I think it would have been very good, if not great if that's the direction that was decided. But at least it was still pretty good. I'm feeling a 7.5 - 8/10.
The Big Sick
I really enjoyed this one a lot - all the performances were on point, I deeply cared about the romance and actively rooted for them as a couple, and it hit the perfect balance of comedy and drama. The one unfortunate thing though is that it was on the pathway to taking the No. 1 spot of the year, but the last act really could have used some scissors and trim about 15 minutes off the runtime. They just really dragged out that conclusion and there are three different scenes that probably should have been combined into one to help the pacing of that last act. But it by no means ruined the movie and the very last scene was a great way to close it out - I just wish they could have landed that last act way stronger than they actually did. With that being said, it's still comfortably No. 2 of the year with Logan remaining king. 9/10.
