Re: Spinoff: Worst concert youve ever seen?

I also felt that Roger Waters was pretty bad when I saw him in 2007 at Live Earth. His voice is totally gone.

Oh man, I saw OAR this summer at Alive @ 5 in Stamford and they were awesome. Must have just caught them on a bad night.

No singer sounds as good live as they do on a studio album. And, to most people, Dylan already sounds bad on an album. Like, almost tone deaf bad.

    Great writer and storyteller though.

The Fray. Absolute worst show I've ever seen

Most fun bad show? The infamous Kings of Leon Dallas show, where Caleb was so plastered that he just mumbled and stumbled around the stage, and after about 30 minutes said "I'm gonna go backstate, vomit and take a shot of tequila, and then I'll come back and sing some more songs." They never came back.

And when I was young, George Strait used to host this rodeo and play a show in our tiny hometown every summer (supposedly he agreed to keep doing it because they found a bunch of drugs in his bus one time, and he agreed to do it for his community service). One time he came out completely hammered, sang two songs, and passed out face first on stage and had to be carried off. Lol

Oh shit thanks for the reminder. I totally forgot I was at that show in St. Louis where Kings of Leon got shat on by some birds and left the stage after 3 songs.

    Obviously

I wasn't saying he can necessarily sing live, maybe he can't. That argument just doesn't make sense to me... saying oh well he's not a singer. They've released a lot of great music that he sounds good on.... I don't think it's strange that people going to see them would expect he could pull off something even remotely resembling what their actual songs sound like.

I've seen some really awful openers at shows.

Avett Brothers (5 times for DMB) I know this will be unpopular but I just don't get their appeal
Tamar Braxton unreal how bad this was.

I thought death cab was ok. not bad, but don't really add anything live

counting crows were pretty terrible. we didn't get a poetry slam esque show, but I'm pretty sure duritz changed the tone and inflection of EVERY lyric to every song. it made them all sound weird. you wrote a melody for a reason man

Didn't catch that! I was drinking on a boat until the last possible second (hence part of the problem with the show overall). We were in section like 112 / 113 - one of the last rows, so the stage was far away and it sounded like we were listening to the radio. The guy behind us bitched that we weren't sitting and I fought with my now husband because of that guy (did I mention I had too much to drink?). It just wasn't a good show.

The Fray. It's the only show I walked out on. About eight songs in my brother turned to me and said "didn't they play this song already?" and was being serious.

I think what really made their shittiness stand out was the fact G. Love and Special Sauce opened. I knew a couple Fray songs going in so I figured they'd be better. Nope!

Shocked a lot of people thought the Crows sucked live. I feel like they would be pretty good.

This is why I stopped listening to OAR, plus their last three albums were hot fucking garbage. The first few years seeing them (around 2007-2010) they were really good and fun shows. But the next two times I saw them they sucked ass, their albums turned to shit and I gave up. I've never had a band I liked so much turn so sour so fast.

Saw him last summer on the beach in AC. He was terrific. I could image the crowd being terrible though. Luckily I was in a VIP section because of our store and we got passes from a distributor.

I will say that when I saw death cab they were literally just starting out as a real touring act, they didn't have the sound guys to cover that big a room and their songs probably hadn't grown into ones that work for that size audience

that's a common thing throughout DMB's career. i remember when Macy Gray opened for them during the stadium tour in 2001 she was AWFUL.

    also on my list:

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, bonnaroo 2003 i think it was. Their shtick is that they setup a screen on stage and project pictures onto it, and play songs based on the pic. the problem with that was they had a mid-day set and you couldnt see the pictures on the screen. also, their songs were AWFUL. we stayed for a few songs and left.

Nelly - UConn spring weekend 2001. Guster was the opener . I like Guster, and i stuck around for Nelly, who was supposed to go on around 10:30-11pm or something like that. He didnt go on until almost 1am, and then he sucked. just an awful performance

I saw Dylan at bonnaroo 2004. he sounded awful. his band was fuckin great though

Kendrick Lamar and Run the Jewels are probably the best live hip-hop acts I've seen.

LL Cool J was fuckin' lit. I'm shocked to type that. But he was amazing the one time I saw him.

Nasty Nas was pretty good, too. He has impressive breath control. He didn't have a hype man to finish bars for him.

Kanye is an unguided missile, but one of the Yeezus tour gigs I saw with the Stage Mountain was pretty great.

His voice is terrible and he also has a habit of changing the arrangements to older material so you don't know what it is until he starts croaking out the lyrics.

He also has zero stage personality. Rarely says a word.

I love me some Bob, so I see him every few years, but it's good to know what you're getting yourself into.

Interesting, I think ZBB puts on a great show. I understand the crowd comment though.

I think what really made their shittiness stand out was the fact G. Love and Special Sauce opened. I knew a couple Fray songs going in so I figured they'd be better. Nope!
The Fray would be my 2nd worst. The Fray is awful.

Ice Cube was pretty awesome when I saw him back in the 90's.

Re: Spinoff: Worst concert youve ever seen?

I've seen literally hundreds of shows (probably in the 700 range if I had to estimate) and honestly I can't recall very many that were out and out bad. Certainly some that were "meh" or forgettable, but very few where I walked away like "Holy shit that was horrible." Ones that were generally were usually because of poor sound or tech issues as opposed to a bad performance. There's a few that stick out though:

    1. 7/28/1995, I was 15 years old and we went to see Van Halen on the Balance tour. Awesome show. The opening acts were Skid Row on their final tour with Sebastian Bach, and in the first slot was Our Lady Peace, who you may remember had a few moderate rock radio hits back in the mid-late 90's. This was super early in their career, I am not even sure if 'Superman's Dead' had hit at radio yet. Anyway, they're playing early in the night obviously - it's still light out, people are just starting to trickle into the ampitheater. The place is *maybe* 25% full at this point and that might be being generous. They aren't getting much of a response. Not a negative response but just, the kind of response you expect for a 3rd on the bill opener that no one's really heard of before. Most people are still milling around getting beers, talking to each other, not paying a ton of attention. About halfway through their set, the singer just starts to freak out and completely berate the crowd out of nowhere for their lack of enthusiasm. "You guys are pathetic! This is the worst fucking crowd I've ever fucking seen! I know we're not fucking Van Halen but you could at least stand up!!" Needless to say that didn't exactly improve their situation.

    2. In 2003 I watched Limp Bizkit literally get booed off the stage. They were opening for Metallica at one of those big festival-y things they did at a racetrack outside of Chicago. If I remember correctly it was Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, and Mudvayne. This was right at the point where the big backlash against Limp Bizkit had really gotten into full swing. I don't even recall that there was anything about their performance that was particularly awful, but literally from the second they stepped on stage they were mercilessly booed non stop and people were throwing anything and everything they could get their hands on at the stage. It was absolutely hilarious and to the point where I actually felt kind of bad for them. They pushed through about 4 songs or so before just completely giving up and walking offstage, never to return.

    3. The fucking Deftones. God they're terrible. I've seen them I think 3 times at festivals and each time was just an unlistenable, noisy mess. Never understood their appeal at all.
