Re: Spinoff: Worst concert youve ever seen?
I've seen literally hundreds of shows (probably in the 700 range if I had to estimate) and honestly I can't recall very many that were out and out bad. Certainly some that were "meh" or forgettable, but very few where I walked away like "Holy shit that was horrible." Ones that were generally were usually because of poor sound or tech issues as opposed to a bad performance. There's a few that stick out though:
1. 7/28/1995, I was 15 years old and we went to see Van Halen on the Balance tour. Awesome show. The opening acts were Skid Row on their final tour with Sebastian Bach, and in the first slot was Our Lady Peace, who you may remember had a few moderate rock radio hits back in the mid-late 90's. This was super early in their career, I am not even sure if 'Superman's Dead' had hit at radio yet. Anyway, they're playing early in the night obviously - it's still light out, people are just starting to trickle into the ampitheater. The place is *maybe* 25% full at this point and that might be being generous. They aren't getting much of a response. Not a negative response but just, the kind of response you expect for a 3rd on the bill opener that no one's really heard of before. Most people are still milling around getting beers, talking to each other, not paying a ton of attention. About halfway through their set, the singer just starts to freak out and completely berate the crowd out of nowhere for their lack of enthusiasm. "You guys are pathetic! This is the worst fucking crowd I've ever fucking seen! I know we're not fucking Van Halen but you could at least stand up!!" Needless to say that didn't exactly improve their situation.
2. In 2003 I watched Limp Bizkit literally get booed off the stage. They were opening for Metallica at one of those big festival-y things they did at a racetrack outside of Chicago. If I remember correctly it was Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, and Mudvayne. This was right at the point where the big backlash against Limp Bizkit had really gotten into full swing. I don't even recall that there was anything about their performance that was particularly awful, but literally from the second they stepped on stage they were mercilessly booed non stop and people were throwing anything and everything they could get their hands on at the stage. It was absolutely hilarious and to the point where I actually felt kind of bad for them. They pushed through about 4 songs or so before just completely giving up and walking offstage, never to return.
3. The fucking Deftones. God they're terrible. I've seen them I think 3 times at festivals and each time was just an unlistenable, noisy mess. Never understood their appeal at all.
