Reading through this thread, I'm noticing 'You & Me' hasn't been receiving much love in peoples' rankings. It was near the bottom of my list on first listen to the album. I was bothered by the repetitiveness of the chorus and simplicity of the music. But...in the context of the album, it's a damn near perfect way to close.
The album ends on such an emotional rollercoaster with the weighty themes in Alligator Pie, the exhausting ecstasy of Seven, and the explosive boiling point of Time Bomb (the culmination of all the extreme emotions touched on throughout the first 10 tracks).
Baby Blue then follows as the moment of pause, quiet, fatigue, and reflection - the moment of solitude where all the weight of the world has finally crushed us, despite our best efforts. You can hear it in Dave's voice. He is a beaten man. To end the album like that would be to admit defeat.
Then comes You & Me. Instead of the angry tone in Time Bomb, You and Me is a simple song of rebirth - taking what we've learned from hardships/failure and starting again with a renewed vision of the f'ed up world and appreciation for simplicity. The repetitive lyrics and beat are like our footsteps moving forward. Not running, not panicked, but with a clarity and calm that everything will be ok. The music is purposely less dynamic because our new life is less volatile emotionally.
No matter what, we move on with life...and so too does this band.
