ah, okay. I read that the rule was that you're not allowed to leave them out overnight, and figured he must be doing so. So, yeah, that's pretty odd that this person would do that. The note thing is a good idea . . . it should go something like this:
"Dir Sir/Madam,
I want to offer you my thanks for restoring my garbage can to my premises every pick-up day before I have a chance to return from work and do it myself. It really is very kind of you. I feel the need to point out, though, that putting it in front of my door is slightly inconvenient for me. However, since you are clearly more than willing to assist me in the transport of my trash receptacle, it should not be too much to ask of you that, instead of in front of my door, you place it in the backyard where it belongs. I hope this simple request does not strain our relationship.
