Bow Drops

So nancies was aborted because Boyd dropped his bow tonight in Australia.

I have been to a fair amount of DMB shows, and have never seen this happen. However, when he came to Buffalo to promote his movie and played with a local musician he dropped the bow 2 times, during a 30-40minute session. I remember thinking to myself, man I have never seen that before.

Im sure its no reason for concern, but how often does this happen? And could it be trending upward? I know its only once, and is probably nothing, but how could it affect setlists if its already affected 1?

... I know there isnt a real answer, but my mind is just going due to some boredom at work.

I taped the entire performance, don't remember him dropping his bow but I was really just paying attention to trying to make sure I recorded it well as a souvenir for Tim Britt.

All 6 episodes are here, all filmed in 1080p24 - https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...rror+tim+britt

Weird that they aborted a song over it.

I really want to ask Henry what he thinks of it all but I figure that should be left alone.

When BT recently played w/ Phil & Friends he dropped his bow A LOT. Enough that most show reviews even commented on it. I don't have a total, but this seems to be happening more and more.

Yeah, I think the reports are incorrect. I didn't see the whole performance, but based on these videos, it looks like they continued after he dropped it.

What do we think is going on here? What's the general consensus? I've heard nothing of this before. Is it a degenrative muscular condition?

I think it may be. I had posted in another thread earlier, that it's not uncommon for viola/violinists to develop musculoskeletal disorders from the repetitive motion of bowing and the constraints of the instrument.

Or, Boyd is just really losing his shit.

Someone compared BT's recent drops w/ Andrew Bird who developed a problem w/ his bowing arm and began playing guitar for it to heal. I do not know this information to be true or false, but someone else had theorized this to be the case.

That's true, never thought about plain old RSI injuries. Hopefully if it's something like this Boyd will be able to get some physio program in place or rehabilitative program that will give him a path to get back on track. I'm sure it's frustrating for him.

I don't like to make speculations about the band member's personal situations, but over last couple years, I can't help but think something is going on with Boyd. I say that out of concern, not mockery. Between his out of tune solos, to the front of house mix muting him during prominent violin moments, and now him falling off the stage/dropping his bow, I'm concerned.

If DMB were Motley Crue or something, I'd say Boyd was hitting his "rock bottom on drugs" stage. But I have too much respect and appreciation for Boyd to go there. I just hope whatever is going on with him, if anything at all, is resolved soon.

I'm leaning towards some sort of nagging pain/injury. At Phil Lesh, he dropped it literally 15-20 times and a lot of the time when he got the chance, we was kind of working his right hand...seemingly trying to alleviate some pain or stretching his fingers.

This seems to be the most logical conclusion, and not uncommon at all. Dave Mustaine nearly lost his career in Megadeth from a hand condition due to guitar playing.

He actually damaged his radial nerve while in the hospital for a kidney stone. He was on pain medication and fell asleep with his arm over the back of a chair. It's called "Saturday Night Palsy". It didn't have anything to do with playing guitar.

The only reason I know this is because it happend to me and I did a lot of research. I fell asleep on my left arm and couldn't use my wrist/hand for 3 months.

It scared the hell out of me and I couldn't play drums for a long time. Almost lost a job because of it.

    Nerve injuries are brutal....

Lets be honest: Boyd's been hitting it really hard these past few years; maybe even more than when DMB was trying to earn their stripes. Between relentless DMB touring, he's been promoting a movie through screenings and performances, and recording and performing w/ other muscians. He might be turned down in the mix and / or out of tune, but he's still playing like a madman. -- My guess is that it's starting to catchup to him.
