Good song? Nah, let's not play it.

It's fucking moronic that Broken Things doesn't get played.

For me, it's AFTW. I do like Big Whiskey a good bit actually, but AFTW is just a better album. I disagree that it seems like they are forcing themselves into their older sound. I think Lillywhite just knows how to make them sound like that in the studio. And one big issue I have with BW is that entirely too often the violin and sax, two key components of DMB and what got me into the band, are essentially window dressing rather than integrated into the sound.

And Baby Blue, it's a great song. Overrated? Maybe. But forget it's a tribute to Roi and think about saying goodbye to someone you love. Powerful shit.

There is truth to this. I'll never forget a review I read on Nancies.org about the 6.10.97 show. The guy flat out said the band was stale and lacked any creativity. But man, that Seek Up.

I agree with colden's arguments from January that BWGK is a true representation of DMB today and AFTW is more of a grasp for past glory, but I still prefer AFTW. I'm going off the worst of each album. For me Gaucho and Belly Full far exceed Dive In and You & Me.

Broken Things is a dud live, it's unfortunate because it's one of the few good songs from AFTW.

Hopefully we hear way more AFTW this summer....AFTW is better produced, features the whole band pretty equally, has average to above average lyrics, translates much better live, etc.
I always got a cheesy rock-pop vibe from BW, except for a few songs (Squirm, Baby Blue, LITHOG).

I'm legitimately shocked at this result. I've been off the boards for a long time other than an occasional lurk, but I really enjoyed BW right from the beginning while there's really nothing that has drawn me into AFTW. I'm gonna have to give it another go before this summer, especially since I haven't seen the band live since the Caravans, but I just don't see the appeal of AFTW. One of the reasons I've been less than excited about seeing the band live is just because I disliked AFTW so much. I rate it above Stand Up but right about even with Everyday. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I've felt.

Don't worry, they don't play it. You'll still get plenty of BW.

So I've heard. I'd like to hear some AFTW live though, all I've seen is "Sweet" at Chicago.

    Was that just Dave solo?

I like the way Sweet has filled out in the latter part of the song live, with the band. I'd still rather not hear it outside of the E1 spot, but it's gotten better.

It was. I was surprised how similar it ended up on the album. Sounded disjointed on the album to me, for whatever reason. But most of AFTW sounds like that to me. BW felt "fuller" to me.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I've felt.
I'm with you on AFTW. With the exception of Broken Things, Belly Belly and Snow Outside, it just doesn't do it for me either. I can respect others' opinions on BW bc it has been so overplayed, but I just do not get the love for Mercy, Gaucho, If Only, etc,. Those three are bottom 15 for me easily. Broken Things tho is top 15. Just wish the band spent more time on the whole album as it just feels like it's lacking something.

^ give Gaucho from LT29 a listen. It's beautiful, I have a found appreciation for the tune after that.

Yeah I agree with people that BW feels more complete and "fuller". I think I like AFTW a little bit more though.
