Re: The National

I feel like this is the latest in a string of attempts by MOMA to do some outlandish and celebrity-based lunacy to increase foot traffic.

I actually enjoy Kjartansson's work. Wish I was in NYC to at least check this out. Pretty cool.

I actually disagree, I've never liked Sorrow and didn't like how it opened all the High Violet shows.

Vanderlyle would've been so much better as an opener. But I do agree that it is literally the perfect E1.

Runaway opened the show I went to. I would have rather had Sorrow open, even though I love Runaway.

Ah shit. I'm drunk, sorry, I know you're right in Runaway opening.

Even during the Boxer tour I feel like they still used a slow song to open. It's kinda their MO.

I've actually seen them open with Mistaken for Strangers and it was awesome. They have so many high energy driving songs that I've always thought it weird that they tend to open with a slow one.

No worries, man. I too would like them to open with some of their more high energy songs, but they seem to enjoy starting the evening slowly and then building up from there. Dammit I wish they were coming to Orlando soon.

I think they typically open with a slow song then huge energy song. I know when they were at Radio City Mistaken for Strangers was the #2 and it was so awesome.

Going to see them in Jersey this summer. I'm thrilled but obviously need to hear the album first. Not that I don't trust them.

They have so many showstopper songs now (England, Squalor, Afraid of, Mr. November, Fake Empire, Conversation, Terrible Love), they need to start something with a high energy buildup song to stagger them.

When I saw them open for R.E.M. in 2008, they opened with Start a War, which pretty much convinced me that they were bad ass.

Mistaken for Strangers opened one of the other times I saw them. And it was an HV show.

All of these songs are badass and would make excelent openers.

Also, they can start mixing up the sets every night now. There are so many fan favorites at this point that it's almost mandatory to fit them all, plus the new songs.

Either that or songs long Mistaken For Strangers, Lemonworld, Sorrow, Runaway, and Ghost go the way of Wine/Ada/Brainy/Apt Story/Start A War and get played like once a tour, which would suck.

The bolded were all played when I saw them in 2010. All the Wine was a request from an audience member who was celebrating a birthday.

Acoustic Vanderlyle was just a perfect close to the HV tour shows. It would have been tragic to lose that as the final song.

I've only heard Sorrow once live, and as much as I love it on HV, I didn't feel like it translated that well live. Missed some of the and impact and urgency of the studio version.

Did anyone go to the six-hour Sorrow show yesterday? I read that Matt's voice started to give out near the end and the audience started singing for him.

I've been searching for a lot of reviews while I listen to what has "leaked" through liver performances so far. They're all in extreme high praise and every review names a different song that they consider a highlight, which is a great sign IMO. This band is so fucking good. The stuff that we know so far is so great. This could be the album that makes them even bigger but I doubt it has anything poppy enough to do that. Pink Rabbits is supposed to be a classic. I can't wait.

I see them at a festival in Boston at the end of the month. Hopefully they get a full set in.

Based on Demons and Don't Swallow the Cap, I'm not impressed, but I'm trying to reserve judgment until I've heard the whole record.

Personally I think Don't Swallow the Cap is fantastic. Demons has gotten better on every listen. It reminds me of Lemonworld.

Sea of Love, Graceless, and Humiliation all own as well. I think Heavenfaced is another one that is just starting to grow on me like Runaway did. Can't really decipher lyrics off of I Live In Salt and Fireproof to really make an opinion but I like their music.
