Re: Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk (7.21.17)

Not sure if this has been posted in the Rogue One thread, but apparently a 7 minute prologue for this film is going to air before IMAX screenings of Rogue One this weekend, similar to Dark Knight and Rises.

Damn it, I won't get to Star Wars IMAX until first week-end in January, doing DBOX/3D/ATMOS on Boxing Day (26th). Wonder if it's ONLY this week-end they're doing that?

If so then it's the IMAX screens showing a celluloid 70mm print, because that's exactly how many are doing so. One in Canada, 12 in USA. Knowing Nolan's affinity for film, it makes sense.

I live 20 minutes from that dome theater in Tampa. Maybe I'll try to get there before the weekend is out.

Looks cool. The prestige is my favorite movie ever. Bateman was great every single one including the most absurd part when batman must have spent weeks setting up the fire flares to the bridge instead of helping people. I mean that shit must have taken forever.

Batman vs Super man was the biggest piece of trash ever but that wasn't him I do not believe. Anywho I like anything this guy does although I have to be honest I have no idea what happened in interstellar

I was going to do that since it is not that far from my home as well but read some awful reviews from another IMAX dome somewhere about how it looks on that screen. So I decided to just go the closer IMAX.

Please share your review somewhere for future reference.

I saw Interstellar on the IMAX dome at MOSI, and it looked fine to me, although I'm not terribly picky.

It's more likely that different people will have different levels of sensitivity to the curves on the dome when showing material not filmed with the OMNIMAX lens to offset the dome's curvature.

It would bug the heck out of me.

Saw the prologue before Rogue One, and I'm thinking this film is going to be awesome. Super intense and well shot, with tons of realism, like basically every Nolan film.

The only weird thing about watching a feature film on the dome is the sides kind of curl up and you have to turn your head a bit to see things on the edges of the screen. They also need to clean the screen a bit, as some dirty spots showed up during parts of the film that were during the day time. If you sit up as high as possible, you'll have the least amount of trouble seeing things. I don't know how people down low were even able to watch. We sat in the second row from the top.

generally speaking I'd say war films aren't anywhere even close to like my top 10 of genres I like to watch, but between Nolan's track record anyway, and this is looking like it's shot incredibly beautifully... I gotta say I'm in just for that.

Dunkirk coming in hot on RT with an early 97%. Got my 70mm tickets for Friday, unfortunately there aren't any IMAX 70mm showings in the area so just regular 70mm will have to do.

I hate the AMC Veteran's IMAX....it just seems like a shitty IMAX theater.

They have a very nice Dolby Cinema theater though.

So far the only negative reviews are from Compuserve, Slant Magazine, and Fat Guys at the Movies. 100% from top critics.

Just saw it this evening in 70mm IMAX. This was far and away my most anticipated movie of the summer, even more so than Spiderman (which I loved). And if I'm being honest....it was just Meh for me. There were a few moments that Nolan did a great job of putting you in the moment that were pretty cool, but those moments were few and far between for me. There's huge chunks of the movie where I was just straight up bored. There's zero back story or emotional buildup on any of the characters so wasn't made to care about any of them. I was completely indifferent to who died or survived, no emotional pull at all. And there's a few scenes that I know Nolan was hoping to put a lump in the audience's throat, but it just wasn't there for me. And I'm a SUCKER for the big emotional scene in movies/TV shows but it didn't happen for me. All in all a huge letdown, easily my least favorite Nolan movie. I've seen probably a dozen other war movies that I thought were better than this.
