Congrats! When you start doing this running thing, I think we all set a mental goal on what we think we can do. Then you get out there and learn real quick the dedication that it is going to take to get there.

So anytime that you set a goal and achieve it, I think you deserve all the props.

I don't have the Nike plus iPod, but I do have an iPod, yet I run in Asics. So do I get half credit?

    Re: **Official Running Thread**

I figured I'd post my work out routine, since it's probably around 75% running/cardio.

    Sunday & Monday: Cardio
    Tuesday: Lifting
    Wednesday: Cardio
    Thursday: Lifting
    Friday & Saturday: Cardio

Now, I'll usually take a day off once in awhile. I average about 6 days a week of working out. With cardio, I mix it up, and that's key. I use ellipticals/treadmills/running outside. If you use a treadmill every time, your body will get used to it and won't do as much as it once did. That's why I try to use each cardio option 1-2 times a week..

In terms of time/distance, I average about to about 3.5 - 4 miles each time I do cardio. When using ellipticals, I do some kind of warm-up before I get started. I then go pretty hard right away, and then gradually cool down because you burn more calories that way, and it's easier to go from hard-easy rather than easy-hard. I'm good at endurance, but have no speed whatsoever. It's also important to mix it up with incline and resistance, because those are keys to burning fat.

One final thing: I would recommend working out later as often as possible. It makes you sleep better, you probably will have more energy, and it helped me lose a ton of weight.

I talked to my doctot today, and I don't like what he told me. Based on the symptoms I told him over the phone he thinks I have something floating around my hip socket, which is why I cannot pinpoint the pain and why it's not always there. I have to go see him Monday morning and then go get an MRI.

Oh shit, that doesn't sound good? But yet again, I'm sure it's nothing drastic right?

I really think surgery would be the only option, if it's a bone chip or a piece of cartledge has come loose. I really really hope that's not the route I'm headed down.

I suppose it could be a hip pointer, because I took a weird fall in softball a few days before it really started to bother me.

That doesn't sound very good, but I did see your other posts about a possible hip pointer. I can only hope that it is something other then a major injury. Never like to hear about people going under the knife, or scope. Reminds me that it can happen to anyone.

Are you doing a running schedule? I have mentioned in here my freind that does the marathons, well he is on a running plan currently as he tries to qualify for Boston. It calls for him to do certain training runs on certain days. It is a 16-week plan with the total miles count of over 1300 miles. He has a 93 mile week coming up soon.

I think he is a certified nut case for doing it.

I ran this morning with my friend's Mortal Kombat soundtrack on my ipod. Seriously good stuff. I ran about 3/4 of a mile more than I usually would because of it.

It is amazing how if the right songs come on at the right time, no matter how tired you are, you can find some other gear and keep going.

    Nice work.

Exactly! And Mortal Kombat is really good for giving you those bursts of energy. I feel like a nerd listening to it and getting in to it, but no matter. I'm buying a copy right now.

I go the opposite way. I think music that relaxes you helps cardio go by quicker. If I get to fired up by the music, I push too hard, and don't really accomplish what I set out to do.

I have a rough schedule, but I adjust it as I go along depending on how I'm feeling. Every 2 weeks I run a long run of about 25 to 30 miles, do a race and/or intense speedwork. All the other days are just filler miles, with every 4th week being 'a down' week, roughly 75 to 66% of the previous week's mileage. Weekly mileage tops out at 105.

I got some good news about my hip today from my brother. He told me that I should slap some Icy/Hot on it and see if that helped, because Icy/Hot will not help pain in the joint itself.

It's looking like a soft tissue injury.

    Gotcha

My advice to everyone starting off is to go to a track and run a mile. The next day go to the gym and lift, or even do a good body weight only workout. Take a day off, and then go do the same thing. You need to build strength and endurance.

I'm hurt, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

just ease into it and gradually step it up .. focusing on breathing helps me as well as not stopping in the beginning if i stop before after 15 min than im screwed but i get past the first initial mile or 2 miles i can run for a lot longer at a steady good pace ... endurance

I couldn't imagine not running with some tunes. It would feel a little isolated if I did. Plus I like to chill out to some good tunes and running gives me the perfect excuse to do it.

I ran a easy 2.5 today. First time running since my ass-kicking legs and ab workout on Sunday. Today was the first day I felt that my legs could carry me, so I went for it. I am going to try for 2.5 to 3 again tomorrow.

Borrowed my friend's iPod for a 7 miler yesterday. Stuck it in my running shorts pocket listening to a little Third Eye Blind, 'Out of the Vein.' It was good for the first few miles, then the sound started going off, and I kept on taking it out and fumbling with it while trying to run. I let out like 6 individual shouting strings of profanity. Then, I discovered the 'hold' button.

Doin 5 miles today with music, after I get out of this dump. 9 mile race tomorrow in the heat. It's going to be painful, but I'll try to win.

What kind of iPod was it? The old clunky non-flash drive ones or the newer nano iPods? The guy that runs the marathons that I know started with the older iPods and switched after all kinds of problems with the iPod not working while he ran. It would stop, skip, or just flat out not work sometimes. It would piss him off so bad that it began to effect his training.

I love your comment on the profanity tiraid. I could hear you all the way hear in SoCal. Not sure if there is a more frusturating situation then what you described.

Good luck tomorrow in the race.
