Re: **Official Drive-By Truckers Thread**

Anywho, I saw him last night and here were my thoughts I posted on another board.

Really good show, as usual. Hope the High Road, Chaos & Clothes, WMW and Last of My Kind were my favorites of the new stuff in the live setting. Vampires is also a perfect E1 song. First time seeing Amanda with the band as well and she's just wonderful. Also, Cover Me Up may be one of my favorite songs to see live from any artist.

I did have a few gripes though. Anxiety is not a good opener imo. The intro riff is electric but then it's honestly just a boring tune for the most part. It's a 3 minute idea needlessly stretched out to 7 mins. The other thing that is tough is there were just a lot of really great tunes that weren't played, and while that's just par for the course when you're heavily promoting a new album, I wish he didn't totally ignore the pre Southeastern solo output. Even tunes like Codeine and Alabama Pines were absent tonight.

But overall a great time. The 400 Unit is a tight and thunderous band and Jason is always on point with the vocals and his guitar playing.

Maybe just more electric than acoustic, but I wouldn't say he was constantly writing these barn burning rock tunes. Songs like Never Gonna Change have always been a bit of the exception for him. I think he does what he does now so well, that a part of me wants to see him step a bit more out of the comfort zone because there are a number of songs on this record that while they are undoubtedly good, you can't help but feel they're tunes he could easily just fart out in his sleep. The term safe comes to mind for me. Which again, isn't inherently a bad thing because he's great at what he does, and obviously it's working to grow his cache and fanbase, so what the hell do I know.
I was just going to say this same thing - even in DBT he tended to write mellower tunes, although I think they were given more instrumental muscle by the band he was playing with.

I'm certainly not looking for Jason to become U2 or something and start doing a 180 with his sound on every record, but I don't want to see him fall into a rut either. SMTF played very much like 'Southeastern Pt. 2' - which was fine - but I think maybe the expectation set for this album with returning to the 400 Unit moniker and the slightly more uptempo tone of the first single had me looking for more of a different feel and it just ended up feeling like 'Southeastern III'

Went to two Isbell shows over the weekend in Austin. The first night was very much what I expected, exclusively songs from Southeastern, SMTF, and TNS with the exception of Codeine and the Whipping Post cover. Very strong performances all the way around. The second night though, he just fucking killed. Go It Alone opener, Decoration Day and Outfit in the first 5 songs, and an encore of Anxiety, which is killer live, Dress Blues and Never Gonna Change.

For anyone in/near Chicago, it hasn't gotten much publicity, but DBT is playing a FREE show tomorrow night in Millennium Park. "Progressive folk" trio Honeysuckle opens the show at 6:30 and DBT headlines after. Can't wait!!

Isbell's ACL taping will be live streamed tonight. In addition, Amanda's taping is also to be streamed live. Her's will start at 8 pm, with Isbell's following.

Caught shows in Chicago, Detroit, and Kalamazoo this tour. Incredible shows. The band has just been in top form all tour. Praying for another leg to start off the new year. I think I'll be attempting to make Homecoming this year.

    Re: **Official Drive-By Truckers Thread**

Saw Jason and The 400 Unit when they were in Chicago over the holiday weekend. I thought they did a really good job of playing material from the last three albums. After having more time with The Nashville Sound, I have to say, I really enjoy this album and think it is a another solid entry. Jason seemed to take more solos at this show than I can remember in years past, probably not since I saw him during the self title album tour. The band was tight and on point as per usual and always leave me thinking they cannot get any better or tighter, and yet they do. I left wanting an updated live album and kind of hope they would do a Ryman release of songs over this six night stay there later this year. If I was to have one complaint about Jason and the band now, it is the almost complete abandonment of those first two albums. There are some great songs there and they almost never pop up.

Setlist from 9/2/17 @ Chicago Theatre
    Go It Alone
    Hope the High Road
    24 Frames
    If It Takes a Lifetime
    Something More Than Free
    Traveling Alone
    White Man's World
Codeine (I think this is still their best song live)
    Dress Blues
    Last of My Kind
    Cumberland Gap
    Tupelo
    Elephant
    Stockholm
    Flying Over Water
    Cover Me Up
Anxiety (really enjoyed this song live)

    Encore:
If We Were Vampires (was absolutely perfect live)
    Never Gonna Change

I have seen Jason about ten times now and this was the first time I didn't hear Outfit.

It was said earlier in this thread, but I could hear Cover Me Up at every show and still be happy. Everything about that song is perfect, Jason and Amanda really do seem to be quite happy and that only adds to the magic of the song.

I was really trying to get out there for those Asheville shows to visit a friend and just couldn't make it happen. Sets look amazing, bet that was a killer weekend. I see they pulled out 'Wife Beater' on Friday night, when was the last time that got played?!

According to Setlist.fm, the last time it was played was 2011.

I also love how they've been doing Dead Drunk and Naked -> Guitar Man Upstairs a lot lately.

Over the past year Heathens has probably become my favorite DBT tune. Lyrics, melody, rift, etc. Close to perfect as you can get imo

Such a great song. I got a really good video of this one at the acoustic show I saw a couple years back with Patterson telling the story of writing it at Wes Freed's house.

Very cool. I'd really like to see that solo 'Even The Losers' that the article mentions.
