I work for a big 3rd party logistics company. Jeans and polos or nicer T shirts daily. Khaki shorts/golfing attire in the summer. It's a fast-paced job and all inside sales, so it's nice that they let us be comfortable. It's one of the few things I like about it after 2.5+ years...maybe this should go in the Career Satisfaction thread.

It sucks and I hate it. I just needed to make sure I was working when Uber and Lyft came back and put me out of a job. I don't plan on doing this for very long; just until I find something else.

I didn't think the Texas ride share bill was going to pass with a 2/3 majority in the Senate, and it initially didn't but then some shit bag flip flopped and it did. So as soon as our rolling bag of shit Governor signs it, it's law and Uber and Lyft will be back in Austin. I scrambled once it passed the senate and basically took the first driving job I could find. I didn't want to be left not working when those shitty companies came back.

The higher tiers of Uber make a little bank. Of course they've got car payments, most likely, and all the other expenses. But Uber Black, and Uber Limo service, for example, they make like 5x of an Uber XL.

Wal-Mart, McDonalds, most employers now pay wages people can't live on. We're corporate slaves. Fuck the corporations. Their CEOs should be put on trial for crimes against humanity.

It's beyond ridiculous that they don't.

They will never get another hour of my work, or another dollar of my money as a rider.

I won't drive for Lyft either, but I will use them to get a ride. As a rider, I can at least make up for the shit rate they pay with a good tip to the driver. And the only thing I hate more than supporting shitty companies is driving drunk.

Re: What (besides politics) irritates you?

Agreed on the DUI thing. In regards to Uber not allowing tips, it can really suck if you pick up the wrong ride. For example, I flew to CK and needed a ride that was about 15 miles away from the airport. Not that big of a deal but the place I was going was opposite the way of downtown KC and, similar to Chicago the airport is already pretty far from downtown. The ride ended up being only like $18 and I can't imagine he picked up anyone going back. I felt bad because I can't imagine he made any money.

Re: What (besides politics) irritates you?

The double fuck you from Uber, is that since they were the first, they've driven home the notion that "tip is included" for ridesharing in general.

I can't tell you how many of my passengers have said "Is tip included like on Uber?"

I'm sure they didn't like it, but I always explained to them that, while you certainly don't have to tip, and I don't live on tips like I did with my pizza job, tip is not included and it never was on Uber either.

It is for a lot of people, perhaps even most people. That's not an excuse to pay people dogshit wages for their labor though, IMO. It's been my sole job for the past year, fwiw.

We actually have a significant amount of drivers here in Austin that commute in from Houston to drive for the local companies, instead of staying in Houston and driving for Uber. That's how shitty Uber pays.

Yeah I get it. My brother was gonna drive for uber. He has a pretty good job as it is but the more he talked to uber drivers the more he didn't want to take rides from them because he was surprised at the amount people who did it for a living. He went through the whole process and ended up not even taking a ride.

How much do Uber / Lyft need to raise their rates to make it an acceptable wage? 15%?

Idk, because it's also about the cut they take.

RideAustin and Fasten both charge more than Uber, and while Uber takes the booking fee and 25% of both the time and mileage, neither Fasten nor RideAustin take a cut of time or mileage. RideAustin takes the $2 booking fee and Fasten takes $.99 per ride. The rest goes to the driver.

On that $18 ride Roger mentioned, the Uber driver probably netted $12.

A 15 mile 25 minute ride on RA would net me $21 (rider pays $23). And there's a tip option.
