Re: In YOUR opinion, is Dave mailing it in this summer?

These are random but I came across these comments on the Fam and I just had to share

"They could play spoons on wash tubs and it would be EPIC!!!!"

"They could play the spongebob theme song for all I care."

Good God.

It didn't necessarily help with variety but Raleigh got a set I'd leave happy with

I did not feel as if they were mailing it in at DC & Chi because the band was pretty damn good at those shows. Would I have preferred a more unique set at each of those shows? Yes.

After hearing the latest podcast last night, I'm leaning towards mailing it in. I have only seen the setlists from shows I didn't attend, so I can't comment on the band's energy, but the sets are getting pretty boring.

The acoustic set is a great idea, but badly executed. I doubt that will continue next year.

I feel like by this stage 3/4 into a tour, there's usually more tour debuts.. Songs that show up that just blow the crowd's mind.. Totally unexpected. To date though things have seemed pretty predictable. There was not a single tour debut last night, so I looked up the last time there was a full band, non-cover debut. Most recent was N2 west palm.. Mercy. And earlier that night, loving wings. Before N2 WPB, I had to go back to Hartford N2 when they played You Never Know. By my count, 6 of the last 7 shows don't have a full band non-cover tour debut song. And then when they do, the TD song is Mercy... I feel like this is part of what is inspiring 'these sets as so bland/predictable' comments. And I totally understand it.

There needs to be and should be at least one tour debut for every show. There is no excuse for this. Period.

See I can get on board with this, but they just don't feel so bland. I went to last nights show and the band just rocked. Spaceman? Sure! If Only? why not? I know the songs aren't the most desirable but damn they aren't a shit ton of fun.

The variety that could be definitely isn't, but damn if these shows are fun as shit. Don't give up on the guys based on watching repeats from a computer screen.

In 2009, from NYC to East Rutherford, NJ (about 16.8 miles driving and 8 miles as the crow flies) we had 8 repeats from N1 to N2 of that tour. So it's not like that is unheard of. On the other hand, last year you had only 4 repeats fro Woodlands to Dallas.

That's ridiculous. Why does there need to be a TD every show? They've played 100 unique tunes at least once this year. They can play great shows using those 100 songs that are varied and unique. The vast majority of the crowd doesn't actively follow every set or care if the songs they here at a show where played elsewhere during the tour.

The issues to me are in order

    Balance
    Core songs
    Cover songs

The balance is so skewed in favor of the core songs that sets get repetitive. This is good and bad. The acoustic core is small but very good for the most part. The electric core is a little bigger but mostly mediocre and hasn't changed much in a few years. They are playing way too many covers in my opinion and in spots in the set where they should be.

Each show doesn't need a TD. It needs a balanced mix of good/great DMB songs.

No, the rotation just needs to be bigger. There should be just as much chance to see a song like Last Stop as there is DDTW

What ever happened to that thought of taking jimi thing out of regular rotation and putting in the acoustic set with WWBOM instead? That is part of the potential of the 2 sets format that hasn't been taken advantage of tot it's fullest potential.

I'm sure that would make jimi thing much more bearable to many who are 'sick' of it being played so much. But it just hasn't happened yet.

They have cut back on Jimi this tour, and they aren't closing with it. I really enjoyed it in Charlotte

True jimi does sound revamped this year. Would've liked to see it again acoustic tho since the acoustic option is there. Also by no means was I sayin a tour debut per show, but only 1 non-cover debut in their last 5 or 6, and that song was Mercy .. Its ehhh at best. I get where the predictable talk is comin from.

Just made this rebalanced list of the songs played this year. No TD's added just rebalanced the play count. It's not perfect but I think people here would be happier with this.

Typical Situation, The Stone, and BOWA have been played 5 times or less. That's a problem. But it wouldn't be a problem if the sets weren't so similar.

It's been a while since we got a TD in the acoustic set. I think it was the Butterfly tease on 7/9?

And still only 39 songs played in the acoustic set.

Possible solution: Stop going to so many shows. Supply vs. demand. You can complain all day long, every day, and most have since 2005... but the band has zero reason to take serious any notion that they need to change or put forth a more mindful effort when people are traveling across the country (and in some cases across the world) to see the band play spaceman -> cornbread. Their measure of fan base support doesn't come from AM.org, but rather from ticket sales. Being annually frustrated and pissed off while buying tickets to 5 shows, year after year, only equates to one thing in their eyes: tickets to 5 shows, year after year.

What is the definition of insanity?

That's the thing: ticket sales have been down consistently the past couple of years.

Been seeing them on and off since 1993. I'm a one or two year a show person. I honestly have never heard this band sound better then they did last night. The acoustic part was pure perfection. To say they're "mailing it in" is just utterly ridiculous.

Ugh. You don't get it. You're taking it from the perspective of someone who goes to see a band they love when they come to their hometown.

But think about it from the perspective of the TRUE fans. The ones on the internet. They read the setlists the next morning, and they're just supposed to be happy that the band played a song in Kansas City then played the SAME song in New York two nights later?! That's just pathetic.

I mean, it's not like long requested fan favorites like Minarets and Good Good Time have been staples on this tour.

They don't play Kansas City and then New York within three days of each other, come on bud. You can do better than that

A better example is more like - say they play 8 repeats in Dallas, 24 hours after a show in the Woodlands - 3 hours away, knowing many people travel from one show to the next.

Or Star Lake, or Tampa, etc...

I dont think you can call someone out for not being a "TRUE" fan because they dont hours posting on the boards or spending thousands of dollars they may or may not have to travel to see the band. Thats just ridiculous IMO
