Horrible dmb takes

Post the really bad takes you've heard/read from other fans.

I'll start...

"Butch Taylor was not good on Two Step."

I've never understood that either. The thing a lot of people overlook it seems is, check out the interplay between him and Carter on those parts. Hell, they played together in the jazz fusion band Secrets way before DMB was formed. So that connection goes WAY back. It's just natural, and it's the two of them going back to those roots. I love everything about it.

I loved me some 08 Two Steps with Tim and Carter bringing the heat, but it's undeniable how amazing some of those Two Step versions from 02 are. Check out Camden 7/16/02. Hello!

One of the latest worst takes I've seen is anyone complaining about this current tour in the "....out of their minds in 2023" thread. This is one of their best tours in recent memory. The complaint is that it took too many shows to ramp up to what the sets look like now. I argue the sets that started the tour were solid from the beginning and they've simply been building on them as they go. anyone that saw a show at the beginning of the tour really has nothing to complain about.

Recent horrible take is anyone trying to say May/June shows this tour are anywhere close to what July was. July was clearly better, it’s not that hard to see.

This isn't a hot take. He was boring and bogged the song down. It wasn't the fun high energy song it was in the early 90's, nor since he left.

agreed! LOVE butch on Two Step. my favoorite era of the song is 01-03 (honorable mention to some insane performances in june 08 though).

CP is my favorite, but the SPAC 7.29.02 (released on Warehouse 10v6) and Hartford 7.26.02 versions (check out Jamie / Xcacel's remaster: https://mega.nz/folder/CMYTWJzY#V9TzanQEfF4bXwIcpbz4-w) are awesome and both feature fantastic butch solos.

i can agree with the "boring/bogged down" comment in relation to LIOG and Bartender that just went on wayyyy too long (which i think was more a function of what dave/the band wanted him to play) but his TS solos were almost always good to great imo

Drive In Drive Out playing in the background as we lay in the sun on the beach during D&T Mexico 2023 weekend. I overhear the couple next to us "This is one song I'm never hoping to hear at a show like bottom 10 maybe."

Ya, it just seemed by 2007, hearing Two Step or LIOG was like oh no, it's a 12 minute jazz piano solo.. It just kept getting longer and more boring.. Carter would go into this downbeat, and the whole band would just let Butch play these kind of loungey keyboard solos that you'd hear at a cocktail bar or something. Cool for a minute or two but not 3 times a night.

Butch was a great musician, but going back and watching him now, I can't believe he was with the band for so long. He just didn't seem to fit. Buddy fits up there.

It was so refreshing when Tim came in in 2008 and turned the song into a face melter. But then that got out of hand with the 20 plus minute jams and crazy extended outros.

Now I think they've found a happy medium.

From 2008-2009...I had a run of seeing it open 4 times in 5 shows. 4 different venues/cities. I was ready for something else

You at least win the cookie for posting something I actually said or is even remotely close to my actual take.

Pedestrian - lacking inspiration or excitement; dull

Crush has closed the encore 4 out of the last 8 shows. Dave could literally pick 3 E2 songs and play them repeatedly in order and not create a run of 8 shows where 50% of encore closers are one song. So yeah it does lack some inspiration and isn't that hard to achieve better variety outside of saying "fuck it let's play Crush again" almost every other night. It being pedestrian in the E2 spot is entirely separate from the standalone awesomeness of the song.
