what's that one?

EDIT: What would really be clever is for Weiner have Don about to jump and then change his mind. Everyone would be thinking he was going to do it based on the opening.

actually it's what nobody else has thought of yet: Don finds out that Pete is Peggy baby daddy and he throws him out the window.

whoa... that's the first I ever heard of that story. Freaky. I don't suppose Weiner's ever publicly made any kind of response to/about this theory?

Even hearing the Don-as-falling-man theory irritates me now. It's a metaphor for everyone on the show. It was never intended as a literal thing. For what it's worth, Matt Weiner has said he felt like that was the one ending he couldn't do.
There was a joke about the multiple Bobbys last season. Bobby is off at camp and tells his parents that he's Bobby 5 because there are so many Bobbys there.

There have been a couple of suicides (Don's brother and Lane) already, so more could happen.

I thought this was more just cause it's a really shitty office to have. like, not as symbolism specifically, but more as a slight to his status, since he now has the office that had a dead guy in it

oh definitely agree with you, but with how much Lane's suicide was foreshadowed on the show, just thought it was interesting with all of the intro scene talk

Frustrating as hell watching Don try to sabotage himself. Hopefully Freddie got through to him.

I still don't understand all of Bert's bitterness towards Don.

Maybe it's just because he's such a pragmatist, and he did almost leave the company before because of Don.

I liked this episode for more of the symbolic and philosophical stuff, really enjoyed Don's talks with the former IBM guy - were people looking up at the stars worried about numbers? Also some references to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'm sure it's supposed to mean something about technology - should we be optimistic about it (moon landing) or is it opening Pandora's box (monkeys discovering the Monolith in Space Odyssey and learning to go to war with one another). Other than that I was hoping for a little more pushing the plot forward, but it was still a good episode overall. Don seems to be learning more and getting better every episode, even if it is recovering from a relapse.

Oh, and Don's stare at Peggy when he was in her office was gold. Jon Hamm is a beast actor.

Why are they wasting that much time on Margaret?

This episode sent a conflicting message. Last week aknowledged that the creative sans Don has been just adequate, but Burt and the plot had a much different tone this week.

    Two thoughts after tonights episode:
Was the restaurant Pete was at to open the episode supposed to be the Blue Bayou?
Halt and Catch Fire looks like it could be good.

Same here. I've been enjoying this season more than the past two. The hippie sequence didn't quite sit right with me, but it'd be hard to have a show about societal changes in the 1960's without touching on those dirty hippies. Though I did enjoy Roger spending a night there.

    Re: Mad Men

I think this (half) season has been awesome so far and I like how the show is wrapping up. However, I've also come to the conclusion this show can do little wrong in my eyes, so I'm probably not the most impartial judge.

Margaret's story was supposed to be about Roger more than "Marigold." I'd never really considered that Margaret takes after Roger more than Mona, right down to how they lay down with that one arm tucked behind their head. I don't think Roger really objected to her way of life until he saw her sneak downstairs with that other dude. I haven't quite pieced together yet why that is what sets Roger off. Margaret's right that being a bad mother isn't good for her son (shades of Betty there), but being an absent mother is even worse, right?

The whole sequence showed how the pursuit of happiness can be a sort of gluttony for both father and daughter. Neither Roger or Margaret ever had to work a day in their lives. But they're so selfish in their pursuits that they hurt everyone around them, even each other.

Also, when Margaret mentions his secretary getting her a gift, I couldn't help but think she was probably talking about Joan — the mother a half-brother she doesn't even know about.

It was hard to watch Don almost screw it up again. But I think Freddie gave him the wake-up call he needed about getting a 14th chance with these people. His way back out of this is to do such great work that the other partners can't deny him. He's gotta make a show of good faith, not getting plowed and leaving work to go to see the Miracle Mets.

Agreed. You could make a case for him breaking the rules had he solicited the computer guy first before consulting any of the other partners, but I think he acted correctly doing what he did.

I'm wondering if the main (or at least part of) reason why Don wouldn't bother to go to one of these other agencies at this point, even though like he said, he'd be wanted anywhere, that deep down he knows he needs this structure that they're giving him. That yea, he could sign as a free agent to one of these other places and be given the keys to the kingdom right off the bat and treated beautifully, but he's afraid it'd wind up just being an overall repeat of his SCP situation.

Pete knowing about it was like the first major conflict of the whole series, way back in season 1, he like accidentally opened a package or something. He held it over his head for awhile, finally went to Bert about it, and Bert wound up saying basically who gives a shit.

then Don actually told Faye about it in season 4 as well.

Excited for the episode tonight. Don is going to start kicking ass. One small complaint. Pretty sure after you drink a coke can of vodka, you will look hungover the next day. Don walks in to work like he ran a marathon, no shaky hands, nothing.
