one thing I've always appreciated was the ability to tell the story from both sides, like with TVA and Uncle Frank, but I don't think this album will have that

Saw Cooley solo acoustic last night at City Winery in Chicago. Fantastic!! Going again tonight for N2. I love the way he strips the songs down to their bare essence playing them acoustic.

The setlist as best I can remember....this order probably is not exactly right but I think I remembered all the tunes...

    Gravity's Gone
    Perfect Timing

Studio cut of What It Means is on streaming services now. All I can say it get ready to grab your popcorn for the comments sections for this song because it is going to get some extreme reactions I'd imagine

I just got tickets to see Patterson solo this Thursday! I caught one of his solo shows in Portland in 2014 and and excited to catch another one.

I honestly don't think I would go see a Patterson solo show right now.

I was expecting to see a little more of a sharp divide on the DBT message board, but it seems like most of their hardcore fans enjoy this song. It is a total shot at what is going on right now and Patterson doesn't hold back any punches.

I saw a few people ripping shit on Facebook but yea otherwise not as divisive as I thought. I really like it, but especially the last verse. That's an incredible lyrical statement on where we are as a society in such limitless times in terms of technology and potential and all we focus on is what divides us. Love this band.

While I've always known their general leanings regarding politics, and they've made it obvious many times before in song, it seems to be much more "in your face" and confrontational now, and honestly as a fan with pretty different political views from Patterson and Cooley, I feel pretty alienated these days.

I guess it just feels a bit strange now that they are pushing back against people like me. Take the new song, for example. I certainly don't agree with Patterson's take, and I won't be holding my breath for a song about the police officers that have been ambushed and gunned down in Dallas and Baton Rouge. I don't agree with them about gun control and they, in interviews, have practically blamed folks like me for mass shootings.

As one poster on their message board said, it takes a big set of balls to write a song like that and put it out ahead of an album release.

I can completely understand that. What It Means isn't trying to hide anything politically. It almost does seem counter intuitive for DBT to release a song like this and potentially alienate a fair amount of their fans.

The verses focused on Ferguson and Martin are definitely very on the nose lyrically, which I'm on the fence about. I really like the melody but politics aside I just don't know if I'm crazy about how direct it is. But that last verse to me is brilliant and vintage "political" DBT, where as the rest is the more in your face way they seem to be trying on American Band.

Well Patterson killed it tonight. He played two new songs, including What It Means, which was fantastic. I forget the name of the other one but it was also great. He wasn't political at all, made no comments about the politics of the new album or anything about the current state of things.

I was really surprised at how well received What It Means was. The crowd was definitely older, many people around me were close to my parents age, and they fuckin loved the song. Standing ovation and definitely some of the strongest cheers of the night after it.

Been on a huge Southern Rock Opera kick. Can't say it enought but Act II is one of the best runs of songs on any album ever imo. I really listened to Angels and Fuselage and it's gotta be one of the most gut wrenching songs ever recorded. Hood is one of the best to ever do it.

I guess I like it ok. Nothing really catchy or anything on it, and I think a lot of the critical praise it's getting is due to the subject matter rather than the music

It's not as "in your face" left as I thought it would be

now, the Dexateens new album, on the other hand, is fanfuckingtastic

I like it a lot. It's not nearly as overtly political as I would've thought based on What It Means. I think there are some really good Patterson songs, which is nice because it seemed like his output didn't quite match Cooley's on EO. I really like Darkened Flags, Umpqua, Ever South and Baggage from him. The Cooley tunes are solid, specifically Ramon Casiano and Surrender Under Protest, but I'm not wowed by his tunes on this record. Overall though I'm a fan.

What's up peeps?! I was just mentioning in the vinyl thread but, I took a really long 'Ants break' from about mid-July until today and just checking back in.

DBT stuff - I love love love love American Band. My #1 AOTY for sure. I keep going back to it over and over again, which I definitely could not say about English Oceans. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) EO but when I'm sitting at home flipping through my DBT vinyl for one to spin, I never land on it when I have all the other albums sitting there. American Band is definitely in the permanent rotation.

I totally understand why it's so divisive politcally. That was clearly their intent. I think you have to admire them for having the balls to basically say "Look, we know this record is going to piss off and potentially alienate a prominent portion of our fan base, but our convictions and beliefs are important enough to us that we're cool with that."

I'll be at the rock shows in Iowa City on 1/29 and Chicago on 2/2. Anyone here gonna be at either?

I saw him post something about going back in the studio with his "rock band." I don't know if that's just how he refers to his band or if he was inferring that his next record will "rock" a bit more than the last few.

I kind of rediscovered 'Something More Than Free' a month or so ago after not listening to it for quite awhile and I really do like it a lot.

SMTF is a good album, but the recording is just missing a little something to me. Idk if it was just a bit sterile or whatever, but it doesn't quite hit as hard as it should. I think almost all of those songs are much better live.

Nowhere near as emotional and raw as Southeastern was, but yeah still definitely solid.

Saw 2 rock shows and 2 solo Patterson shows so I've seen pretty much all the American Band songs live more than once. My opinion hasn't changed- I am very proud of the band for making an angry album they truly believe in, but musically and lyrically it just falls short. I have the opposite opinion about English Oceans- fun classic sound, beautiful poetry from front to back.

Super obsessed with Pizza Deliverance the last 3 months, I've come to the conclusion that it's the band's masterpiece. It's pretty much everything I love about DBT but on steroids. Sounds so much more raw than the classic "clean" production in their post DD albums. The subject matter is a little darker and less "concept album", the lines are a little more clever, the characters are a more evil/heartbreaking, Patterson's voice is a little raspier, the hooks are catchier, the fun songs are funnier. The band just seemed so fearless and didn't take themselves so seriously.

I have the opposite opinion about English Oceans- fun classic sound, beautiful poetry from front to back.
It's funny I feel kind of the opposite - the songs from AB just hang with me more than the ones from EO do. When I get to the end of AB it's one of those records where I just want to go right back to the beginning and start again.

But this is why I love this band so much, the catalog is just so deep that everyone has their favorites and their not-so-favorites, and they're so consistent across the board that those opinions usually vary wildly across the board.

I'm super stoked for a couple rock shows in a few weeks, it's been too long!

The boys will be making a run through Texas. Might have to hit one or two of these up

I am looking forward to hitting the Chicago show in a few weeks. Haven't seen the Truckers in a few years so this should be perfect.
