DMB did the same thing when they played with the RSO.
Haven't looked at the setlist yet so I guess I'll hold off. How's the balance of material from the different albums?

When did DMB and the orchestra tour together? Don't remember that.

As close to a perfect balance as you can get in my opinion.

They're playing a full set on a ticket with New Pornographers and The Tragically Hip in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario on the Saturday of Canada Day. All GA tickets, big field. Got mine, will be the 4th time I think seeing DCFC, first time was on the Plans tour. Looking forward to it.

The Remix EP is pretty sweet too, very retro.

Saw them tonight at Taste of Chicago. It was a free show! They played about 75 minutes, had to stop at 8 for noise curfew. Got 15 songs in, no encore. Ben solo I'll Follow You into the Dark opener, pretty standard throughout. Only two surprises for me- Amputations and Lightness. I'd never seen either before, very nice to see them both. Other than that, standard Crooked Teeth, New Year, Movie Script Ending, I Will Possess Your Heart, Soul Meets Body.... I think 4 Codes and Keys songs, eh. Not as good as their spring show with an orchestra, but they're definitely on right now. Check them out this tour if you're a fan.

Ben Gibbard solo album "Former Lives" october 16th on Barsuk. Fall tour also. Incredible news. I wonder if DMBc was as excited as I am right now when Some Devil was announced.

Yeah his side projects outside of the band have been very good...not expecting this to let down. Said he's been working on the material for 8 years and just recently sat down to record it in L.A.

I never wrote a review of the DCFC+Magik Magik Orchestra show I saw, but needless to say it was incredible. The orchestra added so much, and it easily surpassed the time I had seen them before. The show opened up with a 1 minute orchestra opening while the house lights were still down and then Ben walked on stage and started Passenger seat...just haunting. Truly an unforgettable show.

I think the most unique orchestra translation of the music they did was the end of Different Names for the Same Thing...there's like a 20 second electronic outro on the song that turned into an orchestral explosion. (http://youtu.be/mdK7ALiQGaw?hd=1&t=4m19s)

What Sarah Said with the orchestra was just beautiful. Highlight of the show for me. (http://youtu.be/gjcO7BWxdPM?hd=1)

If anyone hasn't heard his solo shows from 2007, I strongly recommend it. NPR has the one from the 9:30 club in DC as a free show on all songs considered. If we get anything like that tour... Amazing.

Well said about the orchestra iMac. Very true. And his side projects! I love the Kerouac album with Jay Farrar.

Anything Ben is involved in is always going to be sick. If the songs he wrote for the "Arthur" soundtrack and the song he wrote with feist are any indication the album will be fantastic.

The album he put out with jay Ferrara is decent but I feel like Ferrara wrote most of the music and Ben just wrote the lyrics. The melodies just aren't as strong as Ben's normal standard. Needless to say I'm very excited, thanks for the news

Just heard 'brothers on a hotel bed' for the first time in a long time, damn near brought tears to my eyes. Things were so much different for me when that album came out in spring 05 compared to now.

The way the song starts musically is unbelievably powerful for how simple it is, combined with these lyrics:

"You may tire of me/cause my December sun is setting/and I'm not who I used to be"

I love all of their stuff but there is just something special about plans and trans that I've never been able to quite put my finger on.

"What Sarah Said" > "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" always gets me. It's just such a beautiful 2-song run. And it always takes me back to some specific moments in life too. The music and lyrics are equally great in both those songs. Those are 2 songs for me that I feel like can be shared with anyone with any taste in music and be appreciated...you really have to suck to not like those songs.

I listened to it twice when it was streaming on YouTube. I really enjoyed it, and would buy it if icould afford it right now. A couple of the songs, like teardrop windows, are straight out of the John Lennon songbook from albums like a hard days night, bt with modern production.

Definitely worth checking out. Less moody than most dcfc albums.

It's a little too happy considering where we thought Ben was personally when this album was made, but on first listen I enjoyed it.

Dcfc/Ben are like pearl jam/Eddie vedder in an unfortunate way: their best music comes when they are depressed. I expected a more depressing album, which we all know Ben is amazing at writing, but former lives is anything but. Still good, but nothing really stands out

Due for release 07 Jan 2013.

Only 1500 pieces. Individually numbered & signed by the band. Vinyl box set includes recordings never before available on vinyl. Available for pre-order now here. (http://www.ainr.com/item_dcfc.html)

This deluxe box set contains all of Death Cab's early albums and EPs, some never before available on vinyl. All the records from the original 1997 cassette-only "demo" you can play these songs with chords through 2001's the stability e.p. have been re-mastered by Roger Seibel at SAE, bringing the audio quality of those pressings up to that of the band's ground-breaking classic 2003 opus (and final studio release via Barsuk) transatlanticism. Three releases in the package (you can play these songs with chords, the stability e.p., and the death cab for cutie forbidden love e.p.) are available for the first time on vinyl, only as part of this box — the entire set is pressed on hefty, beautiful 180-gram vinyl. Each release is packaged individually in its own jacket with the album's original artwork, and then collected snugly in an individually-numbered cloth-bound box and signed by the band.

    BOX SET INCLUDES:

you can play these songs with chords (33 rpm; vinyl exclusive to this box set — jacket features original cassette artwork)
something about airplanes (33rpm; die-cut jacket and layered vellum insert)
we have the facts and we're voting yes (33rpm; die-cut jacket)
the death cab for cutie forbidden love e.p. (45rpm; vinyl exclusive to this box set)
the photo album (33rpm; includes original full-size photo inserts)
the stability e.p. (45prm; vinyl exclusive to this box set)
    transatlanticism (45rpm double-vinyl with full-size 12-page book insert)
Numbered cloth-bound box, individually signed by the band
Expensive at $225 but it's AiR so what would you expect. Only 1,500 piece (well, 1,499 now because I've pre-ordered mine) and a great opportunity to get those early vinyl releases which cost an arm and a leg now.

Looks like Transatlanticism is a re-pressing of the 45rpm Kevin Gray mastering as well. I've e-mailed Barsuk to ask them where this is being pressed.

I'm a broken record when it comes to DCFC but those albums are just ridiculous. I'm beginning to really like codes and keys as well...it's grown on me for sure.
