The reason why some people are getting 288 is that they're forgetting that there's an invisible multiply sign in the expression.

I guess it depends if the 48 is being divided by the entire expression following. No I haven't backread.

9+3 = 12
then you get

48 / 2 * 12
because the parenthesis are now gone
you then go from left to right
so first you do 48 / 2 which equals 24
then multiply 24 by 12 and you get the

Ok, if it's 2(12) it still doesn't matter. The division on the left comes first anyway. You only do what's inside parenthesis first.
