for the record, to me, it is implied that you should distribute when there is no multiplication symbol before a parenthesis.

    48/(2(9+3)) = 24/(9+3) = 24/12 = 2

    Type 48/(2(9+3)) into google too.

    48÷2*(9+3) = 48÷2*(12) = 48÷24 = 2

The reason why some people are getting 288 is that they're forgetting that there's an invisible multiply sign in the expression.

I guess it depends if the 48 is being divided by the entire expression following. No I haven't backread.

    TI-89 says (48/(2*(9+3)))=2

    Re: 48÷2(9+3)=?????

    It's 288.

    48 / 2(9+3)
    You do the parenthesis first.....
    9+3 = 12
    then you get

    48 / 2 * 12
because the parenthesis are now gone
you then go from left to right
so first you do 48 / 2 which equals 24
then multiply 24 by 12 and you get the
    answer of 288.

    This.

It depends on how it's written and the notation in the OP is poorly written.

    I'm 100 percent certain that 48/(2(9+3)) = 2

I'm going to remember that there's an invisible multiply sign, and still easily get 288.

To the bolded: why the fuck are you adding parentheses?

    I am too.

    I'm also 100 percent certain that 48 / 2 x 12 is 288, and that's the rewrite of the original problem.

    answer of 288.
    it's not 48 / 2 * 12, it's 48 / (whatever 2 * 12 is)

because the 2(9+3) are the same number, that sides math must be done before you divide the number.

    2*12 = 24
    48/24 = 2

Exactly. The parentheses doesn't just go away because you added 9 and 3. They remain in there as 12.

The creator of AM.org is trolling his own website. This site is fucked.

Ok, if it's 2(12) it still doesn't matter. The division on the left comes first anyway. You only do what's inside parenthesis first.
