the more and more I listen to the dead the faster they climb the ranks of my favorite music. Its unbelievable..I cant believe I waited this long to get into them...I always thought they were somewhat shitty, but never really gave them a serious listen...They are right up there with the beatles and radiohead for me.

I was going to make a thread for Jerry's birthday...but I won't. We'll just keep the celebration in here.

Happy birthday, Jerry. Miss you tremendously.

Yeah, man...let's keep it classy. The real fans are the ones who know it's his birthday, and they'll acknowledge it in here.

I'm going to watch Downhill From Here (Alpine Valley 7-17-89) when I get home...light up a nice fatty, pour some red wine, and celebrate.

Its Jerrys birthday today! Even though i never got to see the Dead, I have basically listened to them since birth. Even my mom, who is pretty conservative, saw like 10 shows. That should tell you something.

Miss the big man, would have loved to see him play.

    Re: Official Grateful Dead Thread

What do you all think Jerry’s best years were, in terms of his playing? Admittedly, I’m not the most knowledgeable Dead fan, but I have a handful of shows – one from 68, two from 74, one from 77, one from 89 (don’t remember the exact dates right now, I’m not at my home computer). From what I’ve heard, I really like his playing on the 77 show; it just seems much more melodic and fluid…and there’s just more of it in general. It seems like the 74 shows were much more “song based” and there wasn’t as much improvisation. And the 68 show is good too, but I’m just not as big of a fan of the material they had written at that point. And Jerry’s playing definitely had grown from the late 60’s to the late 70’s.

So yeah, just wondering what you guys can recommend if I really want to hear him at the top of his game. Thanks!
