For handicapping Lillywhite's awesome work with DMB with excessive dynamic range compression. He has gone from bad to worse with the DMB albums he's mastered.
Good dynamic range = 11+dB of dynamics. With values in brackets here are Jensen's contributions to DMB.
UTTAD (9)
Crash (9)
BTCS (8)
BS (8)
BWGK (6)
What's next for the 2012 album? 5? 4? 3? Death Magnetic seems to be the poster child for the loudness wars, Jensen mastered it then claimed afterwards that he wasn't proud to be associated with it after everyone said it sounds like shit.
Dynamics on Big Whiskey are terrible. Even the other albums are nowhere close to being "Good".
Nirvana - orginal Geffen CD Nevermind - 13dB
Chili Peppers - original BSSM - 13dB
Megadeth - original Rust in Peace - 13dB
Music is dynamic.
Finally the Live Trax series seems to be coming alive, volumes 20 and 21 are the most dynamic released PERIOD from DMB since Remember Two Things. (vinyl notwithstanding)
