I thought this and mentioned on here and got taken to pieces for it haha. But I still stand with the point! Back in the 'old' days the sets weren't really mixed up at all (lack of a catalogue), I think maybe even until BTCS came out. From then till maybe Roi died they shook it up much more (but even then probably less than people perceived)... I remember trawling through night upon night of gigs to answer this question, and the shift I describe was the general gist.
I went to the Florida shows last summer and was taken aback by how people were genuinely appalled because over 3 nights they played I think 7 repeats out of 50-60 songs, when they "should have played zero repeats"
In answer to the OP, definitely better sound, 100%. They would mix up the songs themselves and jam, and I would much rather have that jazzy / improvisation we used to see. From the shows I saw over the last couple of years, Jimi is one of the only songs with true improv left!
