Honestly, the first rule I tell people if you want to get into scotch...don't use price or age to assume quality. Not that they aren't tasty, and it's subjective of course, but to use Macallan and Glenlivet as examples, I like younger bottles of those better than older bottles. Macallan is one of the more extreme examples in this context as I like their 10yr French Oak bottle better than their 18 sherry. Granted I've never had the 18 French Oak, but the point still stands.
Same with Glenlivet. They don't have straight up lines like Macallan so their standard 15yr is currently french oak, but their higher priced/older bottles are sherry I think...and I like the 15 way better.
But it's better to get rid of all the consumer assumptions we've been fed. Think of years of scotch as different flavors, not better versions of the one before.
