Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Fences.

Not impressed. I usually love Denzel, but he suffocated this one. Might be better on stage. But the whole movie is basically filmed in a backyard or the inside of the house. There's a reason stage plays and movies are directed and written differently. Acting was good, but felt like you were watching a play.

It's good. It's most definitely a musical though, like the animated version. Big choreographed, over the top songs and such. So if you're expecting the live action Cinderella, it's not that exactly. It's quite faithful to the animated version with a few nice, subtle touches that were different. So if you liked the animated version, you'll like the live action one as well. Plus, it's Emma Watson on the screen like 85% of the time, so how can a movie go wrong with that?

    Come and Find Me

It was a decent thriller and then it turned into an action film. But it was also sort of a romance. Strange.

The first one is superior, both are worth watching once. But neither tops any of his older stuff.

I saw that those came out, but I'm seeing him live on 3/30 here in Austin, so I've been avoiding them.

I'm still definitely looking forward to them, but strictly speaking, I just found out a couple days ago they're not quite exact what I'd assumed. The oldest one is from a show he filmed back in I think fall 2014... ? (or def at least early 2015, no more recent than that) and the 2nd one that IS more recent, even that I think he shot way back at the start of 2016.
Because one of the reviews I recall skimming over a bit mentioned about how it's not like 100% of the content is necessarily super topical.
oh well, still love Chappelle, can't wait to see him. Still blows my mind he did that like 6 straight hours of standup one night at the club, and WAS NOT walking the room! From what I remember reading back then they had the energy up pretty good most the whole way thru.

Yeah, the way Netflix has them organized, the "first" one is the newer one, filmed in L.A. in 2016. The second one is from Austin in 2015.

    Get Out

I agree with a lot of the criticisms that Matthew and Bo had for this movie, but I just don't want honk they bothered me quite as much. Aside from a couple jump scares, it simply wasn't a scary movie. But I was entertained and I think this movie would work really well as a double feature with Django (Django being a vastly superior movie).

I think where the movie really falters is that it just spends too much time on setup before shit really hits the fan. At first, I liked that it was taking its time to tell the story and develop the characters - the interracial aspect gave it a good hook to keep me interested. But it just took a little bit too long for the stakes to really heighten into an essentially life/death situation. The movie doesn't really get all that suspenseful until the final act and it left me wanting more in that regard.

Fantastic for a sequel 20 years later, good for a sequel generally, pretty good standalone film.

    Overall exceeded my expectations.

I saw it on Saturday, and it was so much better than it had any business being. Simon's line about Renton being "a tourist in his own youth" summed up the tone of the film perfectly. It paid homage to the original without being overly nostalgic about it.

I also saw Song to Song, and it was so much worse than it had any business being. I'd been looking forward to it for 5 years, from the very moment it was announced that Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, and Christian Bale would be appearing in a film together. Unfortunately it's a Terrence Malick film, and while I'm more patient with him than others seem to be, Bale should be happy that his performance was left on the cutting room floor. Such an immense waste of talent.

I thought they did a good job of recognizing what this was. In many ways it was a nostalgic piece, in the same way that a 40 year old is nostalgic for their 20s. That line in particular, literally 2 seconds before I'm thinking "JFC, this is obviously just an homage to the first one" then he delivers that line and I'm like "Oh cool, they get it, carry on".

A part of me wishes they wrote the "Choose life" monologue first and then were like "well shit, this is brilliant, now we need to build a movie around this". Would make for a good story.

Spotlight. really enjoyed it. Just one of those movies i wanted to see when it came out, never did, and forgot about it till recently. Being a boston-area resident, twas neat to see the scenes filmed in local areas. subject matter was intense, but i thought it was well done.

having just watched the scientology documentary with leah remini, i feel there are STRONG similarities between the Catholic Church's cover-up of the abuse scandal and the Church of Scientology's cover-up of, well, just about all the weird shit they do

    Manchester by the Sea

Holy shit did this move slowly. Maybe I was just not in the right mindset, but it felt like it took forever.

I loved parts of it, but overall just not that impressed. Casey Affleck was great though.

I revisited The Full Monty last night. Twenty years old and still good for a laugh. It's aged well.

And while I knew Robert Carlyle and Tom Wilkinson have done well afterward, I didn't realize the actor who played the chubby guy (Dave) went on to play Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones.

Lion over the weekend. Great cinematography, great story (true!), emotional payoff. The relationship between Saroo and Rooney seemed a bit rushed with the "I can't do this", "no, I can't do this", but overall didn't take too much away from the enjoyment.
