Until a week ago, I had no idea who/what Father John Misty was; assumed it was hipster garbage.

I think he is probably hipster garbage, but I also like what I've heard and will buy his new album. I assume this is somewhat unpopular to like here?

Saying this with almost 0 research but I think Bands have at most 10 good years in them. I mean sure some bands can still kill it live for years on end but as far as creating new material a decade is probably all they're worth

Haven't listened to them much latelym but really dug them in high school. Had no clue that type of hard rock existed.

yup, don't even research this because it's spot on. I don't need another Radiohead or Coldplay album, but I don't think I'll ever grow out of their early albums.

That's why my favorite bands are my favorite bands. They don't have to write new material every two years to keep the shows fresh. The improv is there so they don't have to. That's why I love Phish and the Dead so much.

I think it depends on a few factors; biggest being success and genre.

At a level of success, I think people naturally just become more complacent because there's not as much urgency. Not as simple as just sad vs happy; more about a subconscious 'if this bombs, my career is fucked' vs 'if this bombs, I've still got legions of fans and will still have $X in my bank account.'

Then genre-wise, rock/pop is tricky because you have to kinda keep up with trends or move ahead of the curve and lead the way. OR you just have to be so far behind/removed you're not part of that problem. Someone like Tom Waits for example, his music has evolved but it's never really gotten 'modern.' But someone like Bieber has to constantly be right at the cusp or he could be fucked. He can probably survive with a poor outing, just because he's got enough fans/songs at this point, but one pop album that's no longer the 'cool' sound and he could drop like so many pop stars have.

Where do you stop early Radiohead? In Rainbows is one of my favorites of theirs, so I don't give up on bands until they make me give up... But yea, a great album that far into a career is super rare.

    Im with you 100% here.

Stones have no reason to be mentioned in the same stratosphere with the Beatles.

oh, I hope it's not just a rotation of Pablo Honey, The Bends and OK Computer...

I would start with the Bends and the cut off would be In Rainbows, so a decade plus two years

Fair enough, that covers all the ones I listen to most. I definitely give the newest more play than King of Limbs but it's still way far behind the big ones.

I probably have one of the more unpopular opinions about The Bends in that I think it's a bottom tier Radiohead album.

It's kinda weird. It's an incredible rock album, but in the context of what Radiohead has done since then, it kinda gets knocked down for being just too...normal...for lack of better word ha

maybe this isn't unpopular, but Cobain was a hack on guitar. Influential? Sure. But not all that good. Akin to Dave Matthews - influential, and even a unique style, but not all that great

Dave is/was great at creating catchy and interesting riffs. He's not a virtuoso by any means but I definitely think he deserves to get praise as a great acoustic guitarist. Just depends on your definition, I guess.
