it makes absoultely no sense. i still don't understand the logic.

5-8 wins is a huge swing when you're talking about a 162 game season. i can't believe a team with that many more losses can eliminate another team in 1 game.

I don't know why all sports have this maniacal devotion to the division above all other things. If they wanted to shake things up they should have gotten rid of divisions entirely and balanced the schedule. Hanging onto the notion of winning the division being the only and/or best way to the playoffs is a tacit admission that you don't want the best teams to be in the playoffs.

as much as i don't usually like a drastic change like this, i'd take it over the dumb idea of a 1 game playoff after 162 games...

I'd like to but I doubt it as well. I went to Nats Park for opening day last year. It is....a park. Very non-descript and it doesn't make good use of the surrounding area in my opinion.

Sunday game is on NESN though and is the grapefruit league opener. Should see more of a lineup like game 1 with Ortiz and Youk added in.

Agreed. It is idiotic. And honestly, how much more excitement can you get than game 162 last season? There were what, 6 game that had playoff team implications? I know you all had a bad day then but no one can deny it was one of the most exciting baseball (in general - not limited to one team) days you can recall.

Bad day for Boston fans but ya, it was exciting everywhere around baseball.

I've voiced my displeasure about it the past fee days. It seems so forced.

Toronto is a fantastic city, I've been there multiple times for MLB games. It's easy to navigate and there's just tons of shit to do. It's also extremely affordable for a large/world class city. Only issue, although you'll run into this anywhere, is that for a perennial fourth place team the fans are pricks. What's worse is that they can pick out an American like whoa, and that makes their chidings 100x worse. All in all though I recommend 100%.

Your team has to have a tremendously comfortable lead to run out a AAA team, if you're in the hunt.

Using basic logic, the only people who should hate it is if they are fans of one of the two teams who will lose game 163. Add on to that the fact that, in the history of baseball, the only way you can dislike this is if there hadn't been a (historically) short amount of time where there had only been one wild card team. Which is the situation here. Looking at baseball as a game since 1908, there was a relatively short amount of time where there was a chance for the best team not to win a division to make the playoffs. There really should be no feeling of "we earned this" at all if you don't win your division.

So a better month of September, and two fantastic game 163s each year. It's a great decision. It would've been a lot better if they did it right from the start in 1994, as there would be absolutely no reason to hate this. But they didn't, and it gives people the opportunity to moan about how their team didn't win their division, but somehow "deserve" to be in the playoffs more than another team with a good record. And trust me, if the Sox win 102 games this year, and the Yankees win 99, and lose to a 91 win Rangers team in the wild card round, I won't be bitching. Because we didn't do what we needed to do to get into the playoffs.
Plenty of people dislike it, I think many of us have voiced our objections.

Disagreed on it making September better, teams will still run away with divisions the same they always have. In addition, it ill not necessarily lead to two fantastic game 163's considering 163 could be a one game playoff to win a division, or it could be a one game playoff to decide who gets a WC slot - so it could be game 163, 164, or 165 - ANY of which will screw over a rotation for a short series and provide a severe handicap. Hell, this idea of division or broke will even screw division champs who burn their number 1 during game 162 to win the division. So yeah, there will also be some cases where teams simply mail it in for the final week (or day) and settle for the WC in order to have their number one lined up the next game up for them.

Here's my thought. Do away with the divisions entirely. Allow ONLY the teams with the top 4 records in the league to get a playoff slot regardless of geographic location. This will allow us to balance the schedule and ensure only the best teams make the playoffs. Then use the same format of the 1 team playing the 4 slot and the 2 team playing the 3 slot. Yes, we still may need some one game playoffs to break record ties but IMO it beats this nonsense. Then we can start getting them to nix the moronic interleague idea that skews schedules.
