Used to ride my bike a LOT when I was younger. Now, I don't. But if I ever... EVER wanted to do a tri... the swim would be the HUUUUGE obstacle for me. So I think I'll just stick to the marathon idea for now.

We ran our 50 mile relay race last weekend... 9 legs, mine was 6.8mi. NY was hot... very hot. Like Hell-hot.... so everyone running was affected in some way. Out of the 102 teams that started the race, only 22 finished.
Overall we were 18th. Nothing special. But in our division we were 2nd!

My time was very slow compared to what I ran the same leg in last year. But we had a good time and nobody dropped or needed medical attention.

That is awesome!!! I might have to check into a relay race. Sounds like fun.

I am back in training mode myself. Just started another 18 weeks. Easy does it this time. Nothing to rush into, this is marathon training. Not sprint training.

I need to print off a marathon training plan and decide which one I am leaning towards this year. I want my first to be "successful"... so I heard Hartford might not be a good one to try.

I'm running faster than ever these days, really hammering all my training runs. Did 16 yesterday at a decent tempo pace, getting ready for largest half marathon in Connecticut on Sunday, I think I'm gonna p.r. cause the long range forecast is for temps in the lower 60's at the guntime, everything seems to be coming together for a good race. Doing 10 easy today, some fast quarters on the track tomorrow- probably only 8 to 10, then Wednesday I take it easy, like an easy 8. I should rest Thursday, then do 6/4 on Friday/Saturday then unload on all these foolish SOB's 8:30 Sunday morning. They think they are going to beat Milenk but they have not calculated nor accounted for the perfect storm of excellence that is rapidly bearing down on them in the form of an unstoppable corp of fundamental running principles and discipline that has incarnated themselves as the person of myself. It'll be like KG on the floor of the TD Banknorth Garden on Tuesday, no mercy, no hesitation, just cold steely justice in the eyes of the beholders.

I've been knocking dozens of seconds off my time every time I go out for a run. It's amazing. But I have to pull back a little and get my distance up again.

Ye, I always go faster than I probably should in training, I just always feel like getting through the run as quickly as possible. Don't get me wrong, lately I am loving training now that the heat wave here has broken, but I just always try to get the run over with quick, and then I wakeup pretty sore like I am today.

I think I am the only one in here who is slowing down, time wise that is. I have taken a totally different approach to this training cycle. I think I went out to hard to often last time, so this time I am sticking to a strict pace so that I can I hit my tempo and pace runs correctly.

Milenk, good luck this Sunday. Hope you nail it. Nothing like running a good race.

Matt, do what feels right for you. Your body will tell you all you need to hear/know. Whatever you do, just don't get hurt.

i'm actually going to have the pros answer that question for me this week. i'm going to go to this store called The Runner's Flat and have them video tape me running on the treadmill and then they diagnose what kind of shoes you need. I'd suggest seeing if there are any such stores around you. I'm in a pretty small town, so I'd imagine they're much more prevalent in the bigger cities.

Emma, follow the advice that Russ is giving. Going to a running store is the correct way to get a proper pair of running sneakers.

need some advice here. I'm about 6'1'' and a half and 175 lbs, i started running back in january a bit and did a mile everyother day (not for like a race or marathon or anything, but just to run). Then in mid February i stopped, not for any particular reason, just i couldnt find time or was to tired after lifting. I want to go back to it but I'm not sure how much or even how often to run. If i remember correctly i ran about a 9 minute paced mile, not sprinting or anything. so is a mile every other day ok? thanks.

That ain't very much. I'd go with 3 miles every other day to start with.

    Melissa,

I am in Tampa this week, and it is f-ing hot to run here. Did 10 miles this morning and I was soaked and done after that. (Supposed to do 15 on Saturday, but not sure about that right now.) Now I can see why you run when you do. I will never complain about CA weather and running again. EVER!

Isn't it terrible? One day my boyfriend and I went on a run and I couldn't breathe the air was so thick. Sometimes I see people running in the middle of the day here. Gainesville is much hotter than Tampa too.

Why anyone would run mid-day is beyond me. I ran at 7 am and the sun was up, but behind the clouds. It stayed that way for most of the run, but the humidity was...WOW!

I couldn't imagine running in hotter weather then this. Is Gainsville like on the sun or something?

No we're landlocked, so it's rare that we get a breeze. It gets hot as crap here during the summer and colder than usual in the winter. It's a weird town.

i was thinking about this today while i was chugging through my mile. i thought to myself, "i think i would literally die if i tried to run 3 miles today."

here's my current strategy: run at least a mile and push myself a little bit farther every day. make my lungs hurt a little bit.
