Agreed about Beach Ball at DC this year. Great moment. Never in a million years would I have predicted a Dave solo Beach Ball to open the DC weekend.

Re: Spinoff: Big Whiskey or AFTW?

Spent the last couple days listening to BW and AFTW, each from start to finish. My vote for the better album goes to BW -- but I will admit that the production and feel of the band on AFTW is definitely more classic DMB. However, the collection of songs just feels less inspired and passionate than those on BW. There some are strong moments on AFTW (Broken Things, Soldier, Snow Outside, even BBN is a great jam even if overplayed). But the middle of the album just drags from Mercy through If Only, though I actually really like Sweet.

There wasn't a song on BW that I felt dragged on. Even by the time I got to You & Me, I was ready for it and it fit nicely. It's not nearly as strong of a finish as Drunken Soldier, but it works. Standout tracks are Shake Me, LITHOG, Why I Am, Squirm, Seven, Baby Blue. And everything else works where it is. Gotta give the advantage to BW on this one.

Exactly how I felt getting Little Thing at D&T last weekend. I've been praying to run into that song since I was a kid, got it teased in 2012, and suddenly got hit with a full version at D&T.

I almost wept tears. Full grown man.

If DMB could fuse the styles of these albums, or can harness that somehow, we could get a very good album with Cavallo this time.

AFTW and it's not even close. I never realized so many people liked BW so much. Yikes.

To me the strongest songs on BW (Why I Am, Seven, Baby Blue) are on par with the mediocre songs on AFTW (If Only, Sweet, Rooftop)

Re: Spinoff: Big Whiskey or AFTW?

It seems possible to make one album with both, maybe with two halves, some of the differences in production and song style melt away by arranging the songs somewhat carefully. a few songs can be removed as though they were the b-sides. : )

    If only
    Time bomb
    You and me
    The riff
    Beach ball
    Belly belly nice
    Alligator pie
    Sweet
    Baby blue
    Rooftop
    Corn bread
    Write a song
    Mercy

    Funny the way it is
    Drunken soldier
    Squirm
    #27
    Snow outside
Lying in the hands of god
    Little red bird
    Broken things
    Dive in
    Gaucho
    Spaceman
    Belly full
    Why i am
    Grux

Just like any setlist it is hard to just read this and think it would be any good, i wrote it kind of guessing, having not heard most of the songs for a while, and have been really pleasantly surprised listening to it!! I have a much better appreciation of this era of the band.
In this mostly accidental order the songs all really have eachothers' back. You and me as an early pop folk song more like I did it or The space between backed up by The riff and Beach ball gives all three songs an extra lift. : ) By bringing both albums together, something really opens up.
Someone will know how to make it much better, too!

AFTW is such a good record. Best work they've done in a while. Snow Outside is one of those songs that just never gets old. The fact that I never listen to BW ever and still listen to AFTW tells me all I need to know.

AFTW is miles above Big Whiskey. Best album since Busted Stuff.

AFTW is the better album musically and lyrically....but BW has a certain energy and heart to it that AFTW does not...if that makes any sense

Aftw most likely has the better composed material both both albums do have their strong points. I am not sure which album I listen to more right now however.
