Re: Spinoff: Big Whiskey or AFTW?
Spent the last couple days listening to BW and AFTW, each from start to finish. My vote for the better album goes to BW -- but I will admit that the production and feel of the band on AFTW is definitely more classic DMB. However, the collection of songs just feels less inspired and passionate than those on BW. There some are strong moments on AFTW (Broken Things, Soldier, Snow Outside, even BBN is a great jam even if overplayed). But the middle of the album just drags from Mercy through If Only, though I actually really like Sweet.
There wasn't a song on BW that I felt dragged on. Even by the time I got to You & Me, I was ready for it and it fit nicely. It's not nearly as strong of a finish as Drunken Soldier, but it works. Standout tracks are Shake Me, LITHOG, Why I Am, Squirm, Seven, Baby Blue. And everything else works where it is. Gotta give the advantage to BW on this one.
