The Garden Thread
Spring is here and for a lot of people that means starting and maintaining a garden. So, tell us about your garden, your hopes for it, your yields, methods you'd like to divulge, and so on.
My wife and I rent a 20x20 ft plot at a community garden as well as maintaining a small plot in our backyard. Sunlight is an issue in our backyard and we haven't tried to grow anything back there until this season. I've got six plants each of two different kinds of cabbage that I hope to transform into sauerkraut. Radishes have started to come up. We have also planted spinach and a variety of lettuces. Even though our highs have been around 80 this month (probably going to be our second-warmest March in the books), there's still a danger of frost here until mid-April, so tomatoes and peppers won't go in the ground until then.
Hopefully we have a different summer than last. Most days were over 100 and it was just too hot for tomatoes to have fruit set on, even with watering everyday. Our peppers thrived though, and we still have a bunch that I dried and grind into powder, seeds and all. We were lucky to pick up a half-bushel of tomatoes for free from cousins in Nebraska last fall and have been enjoying canned tomato sauce.
